PUERTO PEñASCO, Sonora — Bursts of green, red and purple color the dark night sky. Fireworks pop over the bobbing heads of almost 1,800 people gathered from Arizona and around the country. Tonight, there are no political arguments or culture wars. The crowd is united in their allegiance to the music of Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, a band that manufactures smiles as wide as the Mexican border.

The concertgoers are here to see a Tempe-based rock band that’s never been on the cover of Rolling Stone. Never had a platinum album. Never really been prominent in the minds of major tastemakers. And yet the group and its leader, who released their first album almost 10 years ago, inspire devotion from fans that rivals any Fall Out Boy.

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers are once again the stars of Circus Mexicus, a biannual three-day extravaganza in Rocky Point that draws thousands of the planet’s most dedicated fans.
The fans, known as the Peace Core, are happy to leave their homes, spend their hard-earned money and brave the border during these tense times. Asked what such devotion might mean, Roger Clyne didn’t hesitate: “It means that love trumps fear.”
