Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco): Highway Conditions

Highway Conditions in Rocky Point Mexico (Puerto Penasco)

ARIZONA:

Arizona’s highway sections are generally good, however during rainstorms be careful going into any creek crossing, or large dips in the road.

  • Floods: Flash floods from desert can bring resulting runoff water to dangerous levels. Observe all Highway Dept. signs. Wait on high dry ground until runoff water levels have come down. Don’t be fooled by deep pockets formed by the force of running water.
  • Spares: Have a jack, a spare, and/or fix-a-flat! There are some seriously long stretches of NOTHING between Penasco and the border, not to mention the border and Ajo/Tucson, etc. Most of the towns you’ll encounter along the way aren’t as ‘full service’ as you’d expect and the Border Patrol isn’t there to change people’s tires. So be prepared!
  • Cellular reception: is spotty, at best, often flipping into analog-coverage only. Got a CB? Bring it. During peak times there are enough RV’s on the road that it’ll come in handy.

NOTE : Arizona State Highway# 85 SPEED LIMIT between Gila Bend & Lukeville, Arizona (Mexican Border) has been changed to 65 MPH, and Highway #86 from Tucson is under review for the same update!

MEXICO:

General highway conditions are good, watch for loose gravel (drift/slide effect) and low areas during flash floods/rains (note above tips)

Choose designated drivers for each part of your trip (Designated drivers should get adequate sleep, eat their meals, be able to stay alert, etc.).

Night driving is discouraged, but if it is to be done it requires caution, farm animals in the road-slow moving vehicles often on roadway (not always with running lights).

You may see the ‘Green Angeles‘ (Free Phone Hotline In Mexico 91-800-903-0092)’ these are the Tourism Ministry’s Green Service trucks that operate along the highway route morning & afternoon hours — and they will repair your vehicles minor emergency breakdown problem for only the cost of the parts. Just open your hood up all the way to signal them!

WAVE TO THESE GUYS…TIP THEM IF THEY HELP YOU….. THEY REALLY ARE ANGELS!
