Rocky Point Mexico… the place to vacation!

One of our many condo complexes.

Rocky Point has long been known as Arizona’s beach and this summer it has proved to be true. Every weekend there are several mile backups coming into Mexico as well as those departing.  With travel restrictions having been lifted, it seems like everyone in California and Texas have decided to vacation in Puerto Peñasco this summer.  We are also experiencing a high volume of tourists from several states in Mexico coming by vehicle as well as tourist busses.

Our condo, private home and hotel occupancy has been very full all summer long.  Despite the heat and humidity we have in the months of June, July, August and September it has not stopped people from enjoying the waters of the beautiful Sea of CortezPuerto Peñasco has so much to offer such as golfing on 1 of our 3 championship golf courses.  There are several fishing charters that go out everyday, so you can catch a ride on one.  These charters will take you out all day if you want and out to the 50 mile reef, where you will catch the big fish.  There are also 1/2 day trips where you will  catch plenty of smaller fish that will put up  quite a fight.

Enjoy a Rocky Point Sunset by Robert A.

If you have children with you, take a trip to CEDO in Las Conchas to see the full size Whale skeleton that was reconstructed many years ago and learn more about the Sea of Cortez.  Speaking of whales, one large adult washed up a few weeks ago and it was trucked to CEDO where it was buried.  Years from now they will construct another whale. CEDO has a large selection of books for sale and I highly recommend “THE EDGE of the SEA of CORTEZ and “LAND OF BLACK VOLCANOES AND WHITE SAND”. Both of these books will teach you a lot about the area.  They also sell apparel, coffee mugs and so much more.  CEDO also offers tide pool excursions as well as kayaking in the Estuary Morua.  Check their schedule of events to see what is available while you are enjoying the area.

If you want adventure you can rent jet skis as well as Razors, Rhinos, Quads and CanAms from several vendors.  If you do this please use the designated dunes for your experience.  Horseback riding on the beach is a great way to enjoy the beach.  These can be rented on Plutarco Ellias Calle across from the car wash.  They have horses of all sizes for your enjoyment.

Perhaps you like concerts and wine or beer festivals.  Rocky Point does not disappoint on any of these things.  Check out Banditos for the Roger Clyne concert line ups.  You will find Baja Wines at wine festivals or wine maker dinners at El Tapeo and craft beers at the Annual Craft Beer Festival at La Arena 3C.  The Baja of California between Ensenada and Tecate has nearly 100 wineries in the region and are doing some award winning wines.  The State of Sonora and Baja have some great craft beer producers that will have you wanting to buy some to take home.  Manny’s puts on a great Country Bash once a year so check put their schedules as well.

Several new restaurants have popped up such as Toscows, MTZ  or Mi Urban Barrio Kitchern.  Rocky Point has some great places to dine in or on their patios.  Looking for authentic Mexican food, try Regina’s in the Old Port, you won’t be disappointed.  Want to have pizza, you have several places to choose from, with several offering delivery service.  Sonora is know for it’s beef, so check out Garufa’s, Chef Mickey’s or Pan y Vino for your favorite cut of beef.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Frequently asked questions about travel to Mexico.

Viva Mexico
VIVA MEXICO

It seems we get asked the same questions several times a week about travel to Mexico and bringing pet, etc. So here you will find what you need to know.

  1. To travel into Mexico if you are staying over you 7 days, each person is suppose to stop and get a temporary visa.  Almost no one does it as they really aren’t checking. f you are bringing in pets, you need to have a current vaccination card for them as they are mainly concerned about the rabies shot.  Not being able to provide one may send back to the USA.  A certificate of health is only good for 7 days so if you are planning on multiple trips, it would get very costly. Having proof of the shoots will be fine.
  2. No you don’t need a passport to get into Mexico, but it is the law that you have one to renter the USA.  Here again the border people are currently letting you cross with a birth certificate and a form of government ID.  The problem is, if there are several people in the vehicle and everyone has to hand over those documents, you are holding up people behind you that have their passports and generally holding up the line  The border people will give you a stern talking to and may send yo to the secondary checkpoint.  Getting a passport card is very inexpensive and will work for ground travel into Mexico, if asked, but not flying out of the USA.  Currently it is an 18 week delay to get new passports and almost as long for a renewal.  So if you are planning on doing several trips a year, get the passport or passport card.
  3. Once you in Mexico, you will get either a red or green light. If you get the red light customs may ask you to step out of the vehicle to look through it.  There are times when you get the green light and they still ask you to look in your car. Make sure the ladies take their handbags with them.  After they are done, you will pull forward to a military checkpoint, they may or may not ask you to pull over, again do not leave money or purses in the vehicle.
  4. When driving through Sonoyta, DO NOT SPEED. Most of the way through the town is 40 KLM or just under 25 MPH and in a couple of areas it will drop down to 25 KLM.  Be alert for stop signs as many are placed in the center of the road and not on the right hand side that tourists are use to.  Either of these infractions will probably get you a ticket.  DO NOT pay the officer but ask to go to the Police station to pay, this is the only way corruption will stop.  If you feel you have done nothing wrong you can ask to speak to the Chief of Police to plead your case, as he is trying to clean up the corruption.
  5. If you are hauling toys or have a toy hauler, make sure you have the registrations for all toys in your name if they are yours and also for the vehicle and trailer hauling them.
  6. Once you are through Sonoyta it is an easy drive to Puerto Peñasco of approximately 60 minutes on a nice 2 lane road.  Remember the speed is 90 KLM not MPH.  There are a few areas that mind the signs and do not pass.  You now are on your way to have a fun vacation in one of cleanest, prettiest beach cities in all of Mexico… Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico.  So enjoy your time.
  7. Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Real Estate In Puerto Peñasco

We have had so many inquires about real estate in Puerto Peñasco, that I recently sat down with Jim Ringquist, sales manager for the Sonoran Resorts.  The Sonoran Resorts continue to be a first class operation and this is from the time they first started delivering condos in the early 2000’s.

He indicated that in 2017 sales were up over 2016.  Now 5 months in 2018 sales are strong and if things keep going the way they are, they should surpass 2017.  Part of what is causing the spike in sales is the lack of inventory and buyers are starting to realize they better buy now as the prices are not going down.  So with the higher prices and low inventory it has become a seller’s market.  The days are gone of coming in and offering a lower than asking price as most sales are now full price sales.  There are a lot of buyers wanting to purchase either for a second home or for rental income and personal use, but remember it is leaning towards being a strong SELLERS MARKET.

Real Estate
One of the 4 Sonoran resorts to choose from

When asked about prices, he indicated that for example at the Sonoran Sun a 2 bedroom condo is now on the market for over $300,000 USD and sellers are getting what they are asking.  At the Sonoran Sea a 2 bedroom is on the market for  between $275,000 and $300,000.  Basically overall prices have increased over 20% in the last year or so.

From speaking with other realtors, who mainly specialize in home sales and other developments, the trend is continuing the same way.   In Las Conchas, there are but a handful of homes under $250,000.  Want beach front, be prepared to pay for it.  In Las Conchas for example, there are several new homes under construction and some of them are massive both on and off the beach.  One of the developments farther down the coast at Playa Azul have started selling again as well as Corona del Sol in Las Conchas.

We discussed the “Home Port” project which has started and stopped several times.  It was recently announced by Cruise and Maritime Voyages that Puerto Peñasco will be the 1st cruise route in the Sea of Cortez starting in 2020 when the port is set to open.  It was announced by Mayor Kiko Munro and Nickolas Tragakes, CEO of Global Maratime Group.  This is a 9 year old company with a great track record.  The port is to be a departure port which will have many people passing into Rocky Point and the Global Maratime Group has the money to promote Puerto Peñasco all over the world.  In 2019 CMV will begin service in Acapulco, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas.  In 2020 the line will provide service to Topolobambo, Guaymas, Santa Rosalia, Loretto, La Paz and Puerto Peñasco as well for the total route.

Semana Santa/ Easter Holy Week and Spring Break

Image result for happy easter images

It is that time of the year when our little city of Puerto Peñasco hosts college Spring Breaks and then is followed by Semana Santa or Easter Holy Week.  All condos and hotels are already being booked, so if you are planning on coming in March, I would suggest you make your reservations today.  Not to scare you off, but if you are looking for a time to come here and relax, you might want to put it off until April.  Spring Breaks begin March 1, 2018 so plan accordingly.  If you don’t want your family or kids to drive down, please check out Head Out To Rocky Point as they will have shuttles running all the time right from your door.  Please remember TAP bus line has pulled service from Phoenix to Rocky Point.

Semena Santa  is without a doubt the most important holiday in Mexico. For the calendar year 2018 it begins on March 25th or Palm Sunday and ends on April 1st or the Sunday of Resurrection (Easter Sunday). Last week I noticed the Fariseo’s are in town.  You will see these Indigenous people walking the streets in groups, in their outfits made of goat or pig skin with their drums and their bell leggings called Tenabaris and of course masks. The dance they do is called “pascola” and the bells make the characteristic sounds of this dance that you can hear from quite a distance. The masks represent Kings, animals, clowns and so much more but share one thing in common and that is having long pointy noses and big ears.  They also wear a wooden beaded cross under their shirts to be protected . Do not be afraid of them, they are harmless and are on a mission.  They will not speak to you or anyone through the entire time they are here.  In most cases they are taken in by locals so they have a place to stay while on this mission. They will let you take a photo of them but a donation to them is how they make money for the party on Saturday the 31st when they burn their masks and take away all evils for the year.  The Mayan and Yaqui culture is where much of this began in Mexico and has spread to Sinaloa and now Sonora. The Fariseo’s will be here the entire Lent season.

Important information for U.S. citizens!

Smart traveler enrollment program logo

Recently the U.S. Consul General from Nogales, Virginia Staab and the Consular Section Chief, J. Michael Harvey  put on a presentation for all U.S. citizens living in Puerto Peñasco.  They covered a lot of issues that were of concern to many in the crowd such a Bank Trusts and buying property in Mexico.  They also stated that they are going to try to have meetings every 3 months.

One of the most important things they informed the group about is a program called STEP or Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  This is a free service and your information will not be shared with anyone other branch of the United States government such as the IRS, etc.  What this program does is to let the U.S. Consulate know that you are either living or visiting abroad by registering at the nearest U.S. Consulate. By registering you will receive important travel warnings and other safety conditions in your destination country in order to help you make informed decisions about your travel plans.  It will help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether it is a natural disaster, civil unrest or a family emergency.  It will also help family and friends get in touch with you in case of an emergency.

In all areas of Mexico where there is a large population of American’s living you will find people that are volunteers for the U.S. Consulate and they are referred to as Wardens.  The job of these volunteers is to help you or a loved one in case of emergency.  For example if your child who might be here on “Spring Break” should get hurt and is taken to the hospital or clinic, the U.S. Consulate will notify the warden who then goes to see what the person needs.  They will be asked to sign a Privacy Act form, so that the warden can give you as a parent all the info on the injured person.  This can relate to auto accidents or anything effecting a tourist or resident in Mexico. In Rocky Point there are 2 people to contact, one being Rick Busa and the other is myself Beverly Arrowood.  Although we have not had to be called on very often, know that we are here to help when needed.

To register simply go to https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/step.html/ or for a specific country like Mexico go to https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/mexico.html/.  It is very simple to do and only takes a couple of minutes.  You can register individuals or groups traveling to Mexico.

You can also reach the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales during business hours (8 am to 5 pm) by dialing 01-81-8047-3145 from Mexico or 011-52-81-8047-3145 if calling from the U.S.  For emergencies out side of the normal business hours or weekends the number to call from Mexico is 001-619-841-3203 and if calling from the U.S. 1-619-841-3203.

If you would like information on the services provided by the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales you can reach them at https://mx.usembassy.gov/embassy-consulates/nogales/.

TAP Bus Suspends Service to Puerto Peñasco

This blog is meant to be informative for all of you who have inquired about using TAP ROYAL bus service between Phoenix and Puerto Peñasco. Thanks to the people who used it and loved the convenience of it.  Due to no fault of the bus line, service, schedules or anything, service has been suspended. Currently we don’t know if it is permanent or temporary.  The issue is that Omnibus de Mexico which is a part of Grupo Toluca which is a conglomerate of bus companies is in the midst of purchasing Transportes y Autobuses del Pacifico (TAP) and although TAP Royal has its own ownership structure, it is still an affiliate with TAP and it will now be in the hands of Omnibus de Mexico.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

Needless to say this is a blow to people wanting to use TAP to commute between Puerto Peñasco and Phoenix and now especially at Christmas time. It offered affordable transportation as well as a fairly good schedule.

If you feel as strongly as I do, that we need to have this service running, let me know. Perhaps if enough people feel the same way, our sentiments can be delivered to the new owners. I think we all agree that the service should be daily and consistent and perhaps the trip from here to Phoenix should leave in the morning for those who want to rent a car to shop or catch a plane and these are things that can be tweaked. We have had too many airlines come and go, so this is a let down to our community in my opinion. Feel free to send me your thoughts or concerns and I will pass them on. Hopefully, Omnibus will see the value of this service to us and will resume the service soon.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point
Riders waiting to depart on TAP

Over the years we have had I believe 3 airlines start up service only to prove they are not in it for the long haul.  Any entity planning to offer service need to listen to the communities they are serving so that it not only cost effective for both the passenger but the companies themselves.  It is understandable with the airlines as you need to fill a plane. Rocky Point, however has always been a drive to city.  Even though on many holiday weekends our visitors can experience lengthy delays coming into Mexico but also returning to the USA. People don’t want to drive all over Phoenix to find a small airport and then wait and clear customs, etc.  So driving has been the answer and now many of the visitors either come a day early and may leave on a Monday or even a Tuesday to avoid the delays.

However, with a reliable bus service that has convenient schedules, it would be economical for people coming here for a holiday, dentist visit or just to sit on the beach for a day or 2.  With the proper promotion, they could probably attract Spring Breakers and senior citizens from the R.V. Resorts in the Sun City areas of the West Valley of Phoenix as well as those in the Chandler/Gilbert/Mesa areas.  In the days before people were told it was unsafe to go to Puerto Peñasco, there were tour buses that would fill up with these Senior Citizens and  they would come down and spend a few days and spend money in the community.  These tour groups had a huge financial impact on businesses of all sizes.

Hopefully Omnibus will look at what happened previously and take into consideration not only the financial impact on our community but the convenience of leaving the driving to someone else.  If you have ever thought of traveling to Mexico by bus, I would love to hear from you.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

If you aren’t aware there is a new way to get to Puerto Peñasco from Phoenix.  It is called TAP ROYAL.  It is a bus ride that will give you 1st class service not only while traveling on the bus but while waiting for the bus to depart as well.  The cost is a bargain at only  $70 round trip.  The bus leaves the Phoenix terminal Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday at 10:00 a.m. and arrives in Puerto Penasco a little after 2:00 p.m.  It leaves the Peñasco del Sol Hotel in Puerto Penasco bound for Phoenix at 4:00 p.m. and arrives around 8:30 p.m.  Looking to make a reservation, you can call 602-272-3030 or in Mexico at 01-800-0011 827 or the Hotel Penasco del Sol Kiosk at 638-128-2685.  You can also go to www.taproyal.com and book your tickets as well.  Tickets can be purchased up to just before departure time as of this writing.

Recently the new ultra modern terminal opened at 2707 W. McDowell road in Phoenix, AZ for people traveling to and from California, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico.  This 5500 sq. ft facility is not only comfortable for the passengers who ride it but for the drivers as well.  The upstairs features dorm style sleeping quarters, kitchen and shower facilities.  Many of you probably have not ridden a bus in Mexico and do not know but the  back-up driver sleeps in one of the compartments below the seat area.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

The  terminal, which opened in 2015,  is not in a part of Phoenix where one  would expect to se such a beautiful modern building.  The project was funded  directly from foreign investment for both the purchase of the land and the construction of the building as well.  Keith Rosenblum a consultant for Mexico based Transportes y Autobuses de Pacifico or TAP ROYAL stated recently that you will never receive inferior service on a TAP bus or at the terminal. The terminal will  be a luxurious place to await your trip.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

If you have ever traveled in Mexico, you probably know that bus ridership in Mexico is still the dominant form of transportation.  TAP is using late model Volvo 9700 luxury coaches with panoramic windows 34 Amaya seats, bathroom, professional sound system, Wi-Fi and flat screen movie monitors.  TAP is also very safety conscious and the buses have a 3 point seat belt for your protection as well as highly professional drivers.  They currently operate 30 buses in the United States and over 300 run through the country of Mexico.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

Current US destinations are Phoenix, Tucson, Nogales, Las Vegas, Huntington Park, CA and they are now exploring entering the market in El Paso.   In Mexico they service such cities as Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point),Obregon, Hermosillo, Navajoa, Los Mochis, Mazatlán, Tepic, Guaymas , Guadalajara and more.  With so many destinations, you can traverse Mexico for very little money and in comfort.  You can sit back, relax and read a book or watch movies.  With the price of gas in Mexico being so high plus the cost of the toll roads this is indeed one of the best ways to travel and it allows you to see the beautiful country side of Mexico.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

Although TUFESA Bus Line out of Obregon has been doing Mexico – USA for over 10 years, they have not run any buses to Rocky Point.  TAP ROYAL has been around for some time, it is the first to do the route to and from Puerto Peñasco.

If you are thinking about travel in Mexico, start with a trip to Rocky Point aboard TAP so that you get a feel for the experience.  I know you will not be disappointed.  Come down and spend a weekend or a week with out breaking your piggy bank.  Hotel / bus packages are available so no need to drive, just sit back and dream of the beach.  Put together a group of friends or your family and experience the easy of travel on a TAP ROYAL bus.

TAR Airlines and other happenings in Puerto Peñasco

We have spoken a great deal about TAR Airlines and now it is a reality. The first flight arrived from Ciudad Juarez last week and was full.  The first flight from Puerto Peñasco to the capitol of Sonora, Hermosillo left this week and from all accounts it appears the airline will be a success. They are still offering promotional fares so check it out.

Also we have talked about the Xpress Cross Border crossing. Today we are sharing a video for you, so if you or friends are coming to Puerto Peñasco from the west coast and are flying on TAR out of Tijuana, Baja Norte, please see the video as to how to get to the crossing.  It is a mere 1 hour flight to Puerto Peñasco on their comfortable 40 seat planes.

On another subject, we now have a new grocery store on Benito Juarez where Santa Fe use to be. It is called SUPER NORTE. I decided to go yesterday…. GRAND OPENING… not the time to go as it was packed.  Reminded me of the opening of LEY many years ago, OMG.  But I am happy to report that this chain is from the northern part of Mexico (Hermosillo) is great.  They have  the freshest produce I have seen in many years here and the presentations of the produce is wonderful. They have a small liquor department and large beer cooler.  I could not get to the meat or bakery area as there were so many people, but I can’t wait to go back tomorrow and check it out.  Great prices and friendly service, that is what we have been looking for.  Bought a small whole watermelon that was so heavy I could hardly carry it as well as BIG Limons and green chili that looked like it came from New Mexico.  The only thing needed is a smooth parking lot for the carts to roll smoothly on, but hey we can’t have everything.  Hopefully after the huge storm we had here last night, the roads will be dried out enough to go tomorrow.

News FLASH: TAR Airlines to begin flights to Puerto Peñasco

In a meeting today with Fernando Antillon/General Director of Mar de Cortes International Airport and Alonso Dominguez/Administrator of Mar de Cortes International Airport I received the word that TAR Airlines which is based out of Queretaro will begin 3 new flights 2 times a week into Puerto Peñasco starting July 21st. TAR will be flying 50 passenger jets from Juarez to Puerto Peñasco direct then to Tijuana then to Puerto Peñasco then  to Hermosillo then to Puerto Peñasco then to Juarez.  As soon as I see the exact route, I will post it here. They will fly here on Thursdays and Sundays.

Airport in Puerto Penasco

For all the exciting details, please go to CrossBorderXpress.com to see the details. This process to build the crossing bridge which  is located in the State of Baja California Norte has been in the works for over 40 years according to Sr. Antillon and finally has become a reality. To our knowledge, this is the only one like it in the world.  It will serve both the Tijuana as well as the San Diego Airport.  This will make travel so much easier for people from the US to fly out of Tijuana into Mexico.  Once you land in San Diego, they are several modes of transportation to get to the border or if you are driving you can park right near the crossing bridge from what I am told.
This flight program has the financial backing of the OCV, State of Sonora and Mexican government for the funding and promotions of it.
Because these flights are coming out of México they are considered Domestic flights and not International, thus not having the International fees attached to the fare. The schedule of the fares should be available on the TAR website starting the end of May. Please go to www.TARMexico.com to follow the progress.
This is so exciting for us here in Puerto Peñasco as it opens the door for us to fly all over México. TAR has been mainly in the central and eastern part of México. It means we will no longer have to take a 7 hour bus ride to either Tijuana or Hermosillo to catch other flights to other major destinations.

TAR Airline in Puerto Penasco

The other flights will start in Juarez and come to Puerto Peñasco and then to Tijuana and Hermosillo.
If you live in Southern California and are flying out of Tijuana, you will be able to check in and get your boarding pass and then walk over the bridge and be directly in the Tijuana Airport. The fee to do this is $15 USD each way and there will be a ticket counter set up on the US side to facilitate this.
We will keep you updated every step of the way on this. If you are wondering, TAR mean Transportes Aéreos Regionales and is a fairly young airline but aggressive and forward thinking airline.
TAR Airlines... welcome to Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, México
