grand opening

The  long awaited GRAND OPENING of GARUFA will be October 5th.  Mark your calendar.  Prepare to have your taste buds be happy.  The menu offer something for everyone and you won’t be disappointed.

I recently sat down with Jorge Valdes along with his partner Aurelio Arguelles to learn about their new venture and about GARUFA and what it will mean to Rocky Point.  Jorge said they had been thinking about this for many years and were nearly ready to start when the economy collapsed a few years ago.  But they see a future here with the still on the drawing boards Home Port project as well as more development coming in along with a strong real estate market.

Garufa Steak house
Garufa Argentinian Steak House will soon be in Puerto Peñasco.

With the opening of GARUFA, an authentic Argentinian Steak House, it will be a first for this chain of 19 restaurants across Mexico to be locating in a not only a tourist area but a beach city in Northern Mexico.  It will also be a first for Puerto Peñasco to have a first class chain restaurant. The planned opening is late August of 2018 so watch for it.

Garufa was founded in 1995 by Marcelo Windler in Zacatecas, Mexico.  Since then it has grown to 17 store open with 2 more set to open soon.  Up until now the restaurants have been in the south of Mexico and in large metropolitan cities. They are know for the prime imported beef as well as the fantastic beef from Sonora.  They are located in Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, El Paso Texas (the only one outside of Mexico), Torreon, Saltio, Monterrey, Irapuato, San Miguel de Allende.  Some of these cities have multiple locations.  Coming soon will be Puerto Peñasco, Ajijic Lake Chapala and Leon Gto.

Garufa
This will be a must on your dinner list.

GARUFA  in Rocky Point will have pretty much the same menu as all of the other locations, with the exceptions of adding fresh fish, shrimp, Octopus which are our regional specialties as well as Salmon and Tuna.  Also on the menu will be the famed Empanadas.  GARUFA  will be serving  USDA Prime and Sonoran beef  will be a mix of high select and prime.  The menu will consist of Prime Rib, Filet, Rib Eye, aged Short ribs and Sirloin.  The Argentinian menu is influenced by Italian cuisine. The restaurant will have seating for 120 people including the patio.  It will also feature a banquet area that will seat 60 and a VIP room that will seat 10.  They will be open 7 days a week and open at 1:00 p.m.  The menu will be the same for a late lunch or dinner.

Garufa
Enjoy wonderful Empanadas and a nice bottle of wine.

Wrap your taste buds around this piece of meat.

Besides all the wonderful entrees, they will have a very large wine selection for Baja (Valle de Guadalupe), California, Coahuila, Chile, Argentina and some French wines and possible a couple more from some of the smaller wine regions that have been gaining in popularity in the South of Mexico.   This is especially good news for those of us wine drinkers.  Lastly, from what I have been told, the desserts are to die for.

GArufa dessets
Enjoy a slice of heaven with this dessert.

Soap Box Derby
3rd Annual Charangas Derby

We all have known someone who has been in a “Soap Box Derby” or helped to build a Soap Box car.  It has been around in the United States forever.  Well, April 14th, Puerto Peñasco Mexico will hold it’s 3rd AnnuaCharanga Derby.  The proceeds from the event will go to the Jose Davalos Casa Hogar, which the home for the elderly here in Rocky Point.

Don't miss this event.
Don’t miss this event.

The event will start on top of the hill on Calle Campeche which is the road that leads to the Mirador area.  There will be a mini car show starting at 2:00 p.m. The presentation of the teams will be at 4:00 p.m.  The first of the dare devils will take off down the hill at 4:30p.m. and the event ends at 5:30.  From the videos I have seen, this is quite a trick to come down the hill and then have to hit a “speed ramp” in order to come to a stop.

Teams consist of 6 people including the pilot and  if you have a 2 seater a co-pilot.  Team members push the car to the start line and then push it  so it goes down hill being gravity fed.  The team members must run behind the car to make certain it crosses the finish line which is a ramp or in the event it tips over, get it up and going again. Once over the ramp the car begins to slow  down.   The cars can built of anything but other than wheels they can have no motor nor pedals. It must have a steering wheel but brakes are optional.  There are several safety factors for the pilots as well as the spectators.  The pilots must wear full helmets that meet DOT motorcycle laws, no flip flops or sandals and long pants.  The spectators are protected by straw bales all the way down the hill on both sides of the street.

El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve in Rocky Point; A desert full of life

Rocky Point has much more than just a beach to enjoy a walk on. Puerto Penasco is located in the northwestern state of Sonora and has one of the 13 Natural Wonders of Mexico, The Biosphere Reserve El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar.
El Pinacate is an area that over the years has hard volcanic and seismic activity. Due to this activity volcanic craters were formed. Elegante Crater  has a diameter of 1600 meters and a depth of 244 meters are also great rivers of lava. In addition there is also a great extension of dunes covering 500 thousand acres within the protected natural area.
Many people have the idea that a desert is a place that has no life, but the Gran Desierto de Altar is a place that has 45 species of mammals among which is the Sonoran pronghorn. This animal can reach up to speeds of 98 km / h and maintain this speed for up to two hours, making it the second fastest animal in the world after the cheetah. Its speed is also their protection against predators.
Another distinctive mammal is the Bighorn Sheep who like to move about the rocks, and camouflage themselves to protect them from any potential threat. Other notable species are the warhog called ghost of the desert, hare, fox, coyote and more.
We can also find 42 species of reptiles such as rattlesnakes, coral snakes, Mohave, Gila monster, chameleon, lizards, Chuckwalla, and the desert tortoise. Not to mention there are over 200 species of plants such as cholla, palo verde, mesquite, ironwood, saguaro cactus, senitas, ocotillo and many more.

As mentioned above this desert has a huge ecosystem and you can only imagine how much there is to do in this unique place. Apart from having contact with nature it has been a place where great films, documentaries and soap operas like Nina Mexican My Heart which were recored. In addition to these films a promotional video of the state of Sonora in Bicentennial Stars and other videos of well-known Mexican singers were filmed here.
El Pinacate is a place with a great and interesting history of the tribe who is known as the Papagos. To this day I have been lucky enough to meet the personnel from around the world who made the special trip to Puerto Penasco to see this marvel. United States, Argentina, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, and of course Mexico to name a few nations were given the opportunity to enjoy a day at the Pinacate. Recently, El Pinacate has a Visitor Center Shcuk Toak, meaning Sacred Mountain which from the Tohono Ohodam dialect. It can be visited and enjoyed by the river of lava that has over 9000 years old.

The truth is this place is so interesting that there are many things to talk about, but I suggest  to visit El Pinacate and discover that Mexico is truly a spectacular place.

Welcome readers to "The Blog"

Rocky Point Aerial Picture
Overflying Rocky Point in an ultralight is one of the most incredible experience to have when visiting Rocky Point

Welcome to this new adventure we just started, we are happy to have this forum where we can comment all these “tips” you need to know about your stay in Rocky Point.
The team who puts together”The Blog”, is excited to bring you information on many topics of interest in our town. Especially, those having to do with you packing your bags and visiting the heavenly Rocky Point.
Every week I will have an opportunity to comment on various sections of this blog, especially in “Lodging and General Information”. The team of “The Blog” will always be alert to the concerns of our readers as well as the hundreds of people that report daily to the reservation central where we work.
I am eager to share my experiences with you, what I have learned from this wonderful place in my few years living here. Being originally from another part of the Sea of Cortes in the State of Sonora, I’ve found the perfect home in Rocky Point where I could fill my life with joy, meeting friends who now are like my family and having the opportunity to work with amazing people every day to help many visitors materialize their beach vacation.
On this occasion I would like to tell you more about myself, so you can get to know better who is publishing this blog. I have a university education in business tourism, and in my early working years I made my way through the Food and Beverage Industry. My first job in Puerto Peñasco was in the Groups and Convention area in which I had the chance to learn a lot about the hospitality industry, and also about events and wedding coordination.
To date, I have the incredible advantage of being in a job where every day I can have contact with not only one, but most of the touristic Hotels and Resorts in Rocky Point, since our job is linking properties and clients, advising and providing information on visits to Puerto Penasco. It is a job that gives great satisfaction as we partake in the enthusiasm of the people and the expectation of their holiday by the sea.
But all is not bliss when preparing a holiday, you can always present run into unforseen circumstances that although they are sometimes very minimal can dull the enthusiasm of the vacation. That is why this blog hopes to be useful when planning your next visit to Puerto Penasco.
This time I am sharing a some pictures  taken with my camera while overflying Rocky Point on an ultralight, I am afraid of heights but do this again as many times as possible.
Send us your comments or a request for a specific topic you want to develop on lodging in Puerto Penasco … we’re eager to hear from you!
