Whale Watching in Puerto Peñasco

It  is that time of the year when the whales once again make their appearance in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. However the main Whale Watching usually begins the end of January/March. It is absolutely amazing to see these gentle giants swim close enough that they can be seen from the condos on Sandy Beach.  In this area we have Humpback and Fin whales.  While you are in Rocky Point any time in the next couple of months, do yourself a favor and take advantage of one of the Whale Watching Trips.  Along the way you are also likely to have the Dolphins accompany you and they do put on a show as they weave back and forth under and around your boat.  Recently a couple of small whales have been sighted just off shore, but we will be in full swing to Whale Watch within a couple of weeks or so.  When we see them is up to the whales.

You can choose whatever type of craft you would like to go out on.  The following are the ones that offer not only Whale Watching, but they do Sunset trips, Bird Island trips (here you can enjoy the antics of the Sea Lions and their pups and a vast array of Marine life) or Fishing Charters.

Important information for U.S. citizens!

Smart traveler enrollment program logo

Recently the U.S. Consul General from Nogales, Virginia Staab and the Consular Section Chief, J. Michael Harvey  put on a presentation for all U.S. citizens living in Puerto Peñasco.  They covered a lot of issues that were of concern to many in the crowd such a Bank Trusts and buying property in Mexico.  They also stated that they are going to try to have meetings every 3 months.

One of the most important things they informed the group about is a program called STEP or Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.  This is a free service and your information will not be shared with anyone other branch of the United States government such as the IRS, etc.  What this program does is to let the U.S. Consulate know that you are either living or visiting abroad by registering at the nearest U.S. Consulate. By registering you will receive important travel warnings and other safety conditions in your destination country in order to help you make informed decisions about your travel plans.  It will help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether it is a natural disaster, civil unrest or a family emergency.  It will also help family and friends get in touch with you in case of an emergency.

In all areas of Mexico where there is a large population of American’s living you will find people that are volunteers for the U.S. Consulate and they are referred to as Wardens.  The job of these volunteers is to help you or a loved one in case of emergency.  For example if your child who might be here on “Spring Break” should get hurt and is taken to the hospital or clinic, the U.S. Consulate will notify the warden who then goes to see what the person needs.  They will be asked to sign a Privacy Act form, so that the warden can give you as a parent all the info on the injured person.  This can relate to auto accidents or anything effecting a tourist or resident in Mexico. In Rocky Point there are 2 people to contact, one being Rick Busa and the other is myself Beverly Arrowood.  Although we have not had to be called on very often, know that we are here to help when needed.

To register simply go to https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/step.html/ or for a specific country like Mexico go to https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/mexico.html/.  It is very simple to do and only takes a couple of minutes.  You can register individuals or groups traveling to Mexico.

You can also reach the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales during business hours (8 am to 5 pm) by dialing 01-81-8047-3145 from Mexico or 011-52-81-8047-3145 if calling from the U.S.  For emergencies out side of the normal business hours or weekends the number to call from Mexico is 001-619-841-3203 and if calling from the U.S. 1-619-841-3203.

If you would like information on the services provided by the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales you can reach them at https://mx.usembassy.gov/embassy-consulates/nogales/.

Vacation in Puerto Peñasco Condos vs. Homes vs. Hotels

If you are planning a vacation to Puerto Peñasco, you have a lot to think about as to where you want to stay. Be it a hotel, condo or home, most all of these are located right on the Sea of Cortez.  There are many things to take into consideration when choosing a place.  You also will want to choose the right company to do your reservations.

Let’s start with the rental company.  You have many to choose from and one of the most popular is Puerto-Penasco.com and they are all very knowledgeable with the properties but also with what is happening in Rocky Point.  There are many beach front homes in Las Conchas and they range from 2 bedrooms to 10 bedrooms and larger if needed.  Any of the rental specialists can customize just the right property for you.  If you are planning to come down during the busy holiday weekends but want quiet time then staying in Las Conchas is probably the best choice for you.  It is a gated community and quads are not permitted on the beach nor tearing up the streets, so if you are bringing toys down, bare in mind you will be asked to park them by the guard station.

If you have never been to Puerto Peñasco you can ask any of these companies for recommendations for activities and restaurants and they can point you in the correct direction.  You may want to  take a sunset cruise, rent kayaks, rent horses to ride on the beach or rent quads or Rhinos. If you are in Rocky Point and the Tiburones are playing baseball, go watch a game.  This is inexpensive entertainment for the entire family.  There is also a new aquarium in town which is interactive for all ages.  All of the above mentioned companies have agents that have lived in Rocky Point for many years or are natives of the area and they can definitely help you out.

Sonoran Sky Resort
Sonoran Sky Resort

Next if  choose to rent a condo on the beach you have several developments to choose from and they are all on the Sea of Cortez and the beach.  These developments come in all sizes.  Sonoran Resorts consist of the Sonoran SKY, Sonoran SPA, Sonoran SEA and the Sonoran SUN.  Then you have Las Palomas which is the largest of the developments, followed by Casa Blanca, The Princesa, Las Palmas, Bella Sirena and Esmeralda.  If you have children a good choice for you would be Las Palomas or Las Palmas as they have lazy rivers and water slides.  Every property with the exception of the Sonoran SPA have swim up bars.  Most of the properties have a community BBQ area as cooking with charcoal is prohibited on the condo balconies.  The Sonoran SPA does have a Santiago Pharmacy as well as gift shop and a display of art and crafts from local artisans and the Sonoran Grill is located there.  The SKY has the TIKI  Bar as well as a sports bar on the beach level.  Las Palomas also has a restaurant as does the Sonoran SEA.  Even though the months of June, July, August and September are hot and humid, there is always a breeze off the ocean and all the properties are air conditioned.  You can rent any of these properties by the night, week or month.

This is your view

Enjoy the view

You have the choice of 3 main hotels that are on the water or have a water view and they are Peñasco Del Sol, Playa Bonita, Laos Mar or Vina Del Mar in the Old Port.  All feature pools, restaurants and bars as well as El Tapeo Wine Bar at Laos Mar.

Playa Bonita en Puerto Penasco

Whatever is best for you, know that you will be treated in a professional manner from any of the companies listed above.  If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me at nocomosi@msn.com and I can answer your questions or point you  in the right direction.  As we say Mi Casa es Su Casa, so come on down and enjoy the beautiful clean beaches and the warm Caribbean Blue waters of the Sea of Cortez and sit back, relax and enjoy Puerto Peñasco.
