September 16… Independence Day in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

September 16 is the day Mexico celebrates it independence from Spain in 1810. It was officially made the National holiday in 1821.  The celebration begins on the night of the 15th at 11:00 pm when the President of Mexico rings the 200 year old bell and gives the cry to Dolores known as El Grito de Dolores battle cry.  In Puerto Peñasco, the Mayor of the city steps out on the balcony of the City Municipal building and waves the Mexican Flag as the crowds chant “Viva Mexico” and he usually gives a short speech, followed by singing of the National Anthem.

The battle cry was made by Father Miguel Hildago Costilla in the town of Dolores which is located in the State of Guanajuato in 1810.  Father Hildago was captured and killed in 1811 after calling the military and residents of Mexico to go to battle for their freedom from the Spaniards and Spain.  Spain ruled Mexico for over 300 years until Father Hildago wanted to see his country  free and not under Spanish rule any more.

This is a national holiday where banks, schools, government offices and many businesses are closed.  In many cities, main streets are closed for parades and celebrations.  The Mexican flags fly everywhere and there will be fireworks, lots of music and dancing everywhere. You will find many regional foods available in restaurants and on the streets, as well as private parties in homes being served.  You can choose from fruit punch, candies, Posole and Menudo, roast lamb, Queso Fundito with chips, salsa and guacamole, Chili En Nogado (poblano chilis stuffed with meat and covered in the colors of the Mexican flag of cream and pomegranate seeds and walnuts, hence the red, white and green colors in the flag, as well as beer, sangria and Tequila.

It is a great celebration so if you are thinking about coming to Rocky Point during the 15th and 16th, be prepared to spend some time getting caught up in the celebrations throughout the city and learning more about the history of Mexico.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Dog Rescue Never Ends

Barb’s Dog Rescue has been rescuing dogs for over 20 years and this is a never ending job.  Summer is the hardest time for the rescue as the winter visitors who volunteer have gone home, thus they are short handed, but also what is more important as they can’t find the dog food needed for the mom’s and puppies.  We have to rely on having people bring the puppy chow down case by case.  The Why Not Travel Store has been generous in giving a space for food to be dropped off and then transported to Puerto Peñasco.

At any given day there are over 350 moms and pups.  That doesn’t include the ones that good Samaritans drop off, that have have found injured or badly malnourished and dehydrated.  It cost about $1000 per week for dog food alone and that does not count the medical attention that is needed.  Every dollar that is donated goes to everything involved with the dogs.  In summer, the water is not reliable so it needs to be trucked in to keep fresh water for these sweethearts. The electric costs are very high here in summer and the mom’s and newborn puppies need to stay cool. These are just a few of the major expenses every week that keep are needed to keep the doors open.

It is so rewarding to see the abused dogs flourish once they come to the rescue knowing that they are safe and will receive good food, clean water, a soft and safe place to sleep, but also loving hands to hold them and not abuse them.  If you are in town, you are invited to stop by and give puppy  love.

There is a constant need for dogs to be transported to their adoptive families or the partners such as HALO while they wait to be adopted.  If you are traveling back to Phoenix or Tucson and would love a furry travel companion, please contact the rescue to arrange to transport a couple.  Barb’s provides all the papers and shot records for you to take them across the border to their destination.  Transporting them allows the rescue to make room for more new arrivals that need help.  All dogs are also spayed or neutered before leaving the rescue. Remember there is never a charge to adopt a dog, but donations of either food or cash are welcome to continue the work of the rescue.

If you are thinking of getting a new furever family pet, please check out all the energetic puppies as well as senior dogs that reside at Barb’s Dog Rescue that are available.  They can be visited from 10 am to 2 pm every day of the week.

Rocky Point Mexico… the place to vacation!

One of our many condo complexes.

Rocky Point has long been known as Arizona’s beach and this summer it has proved to be true. Every weekend there are several mile backups coming into Mexico as well as those departing.  With travel restrictions having been lifted, it seems like everyone in California and Texas have decided to vacation in Puerto Peñasco this summer.  We are also experiencing a high volume of tourists from several states in Mexico coming by vehicle as well as tourist busses.

Our condo, private home and hotel occupancy has been very full all summer long.  Despite the heat and humidity we have in the months of June, July, August and September it has not stopped people from enjoying the waters of the beautiful Sea of CortezPuerto Peñasco has so much to offer such as golfing on 1 of our 3 championship golf courses.  There are several fishing charters that go out everyday, so you can catch a ride on one.  These charters will take you out all day if you want and out to the 50 mile reef, where you will catch the big fish.  There are also 1/2 day trips where you will  catch plenty of smaller fish that will put up  quite a fight.

Enjoy a Rocky Point Sunset by Robert A.

If you have children with you, take a trip to CEDO in Las Conchas to see the full size Whale skeleton that was reconstructed many years ago and learn more about the Sea of Cortez.  Speaking of whales, one large adult washed up a few weeks ago and it was trucked to CEDO where it was buried.  Years from now they will construct another whale. CEDO has a large selection of books for sale and I highly recommend “THE EDGE of the SEA of CORTEZ and “LAND OF BLACK VOLCANOES AND WHITE SAND”. Both of these books will teach you a lot about the area.  They also sell apparel, coffee mugs and so much more.  CEDO also offers tide pool excursions as well as kayaking in the Estuary Morua.  Check their schedule of events to see what is available while you are enjoying the area.

If you want adventure you can rent jet skis as well as Razors, Rhinos, Quads and CanAms from several vendors.  If you do this please use the designated dunes for your experience.  Horseback riding on the beach is a great way to enjoy the beach.  These can be rented on Plutarco Ellias Calle across from the car wash.  They have horses of all sizes for your enjoyment.

Perhaps you like concerts and wine or beer festivals.  Rocky Point does not disappoint on any of these things.  Check out Banditos for the Roger Clyne concert line ups.  You will find Baja Wines at wine festivals or wine maker dinners at El Tapeo and craft beers at the Annual Craft Beer Festival at La Arena 3C.  The Baja of California between Ensenada and Tecate has nearly 100 wineries in the region and are doing some award winning wines.  The State of Sonora and Baja have some great craft beer producers that will have you wanting to buy some to take home.  Manny’s puts on a great Country Bash once a year so check put their schedules as well.

Several new restaurants have popped up such as Toscows, MTZ  or Mi Urban Barrio Kitchern.  Rocky Point has some great places to dine in or on their patios.  Looking for authentic Mexican food, try Regina’s in the Old Port, you won’t be disappointed.  Want to have pizza, you have several places to choose from, with several offering delivery service.  Sonora is know for it’s beef, so check out Garufa’s, Chef Mickey’s or Pan y Vino for your favorite cut of beef.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Frequently asked questions about travel to Mexico.

Viva Mexico
VIVA MEXICO

It seems we get asked the same questions several times a week about travel to Mexico and bringing pet, etc. So here you will find what you need to know.

  1. To travel into Mexico if you are staying over you 7 days, each person is suppose to stop and get a temporary visa.  Almost no one does it as they really aren’t checking. f you are bringing in pets, you need to have a current vaccination card for them as they are mainly concerned about the rabies shot.  Not being able to provide one may send back to the USA.  A certificate of health is only good for 7 days so if you are planning on multiple trips, it would get very costly. Having proof of the shoots will be fine.
  2. No you don’t need a passport to get into Mexico, but it is the law that you have one to renter the USA.  Here again the border people are currently letting you cross with a birth certificate and a form of government ID.  The problem is, if there are several people in the vehicle and everyone has to hand over those documents, you are holding up people behind you that have their passports and generally holding up the line  The border people will give you a stern talking to and may send yo to the secondary checkpoint.  Getting a passport card is very inexpensive and will work for ground travel into Mexico, if asked, but not flying out of the USA.  Currently it is an 18 week delay to get new passports and almost as long for a renewal.  So if you are planning on doing several trips a year, get the passport or passport card.
  3. Once you in Mexico, you will get either a red or green light. If you get the red light customs may ask you to step out of the vehicle to look through it.  There are times when you get the green light and they still ask you to look in your car. Make sure the ladies take their handbags with them.  After they are done, you will pull forward to a military checkpoint, they may or may not ask you to pull over, again do not leave money or purses in the vehicle.
  4. When driving through Sonoyta, DO NOT SPEED. Most of the way through the town is 40 KLM or just under 25 MPH and in a couple of areas it will drop down to 25 KLM.  Be alert for stop signs as many are placed in the center of the road and not on the right hand side that tourists are use to.  Either of these infractions will probably get you a ticket.  DO NOT pay the officer but ask to go to the Police station to pay, this is the only way corruption will stop.  If you feel you have done nothing wrong you can ask to speak to the Chief of Police to plead your case, as he is trying to clean up the corruption.
  5. If you are hauling toys or have a toy hauler, make sure you have the registrations for all toys in your name if they are yours and also for the vehicle and trailer hauling them.
  6. Once you are through Sonoyta it is an easy drive to Puerto Peñasco of approximately 60 minutes on a nice 2 lane road.  Remember the speed is 90 KLM not MPH.  There are a few areas that mind the signs and do not pass.  You now are on your way to have a fun vacation in one of cleanest, prettiest beach cities in all of Mexico… Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico.  So enjoy your time.
  7. Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Real Estate in Puerto-Peñasco

Developments on Sandy Beach
Developments on Sandy Beach

If you are looking to buy a second home or condo in Puerto Peñasco, now may be the time to do it.  Rocky Point tends to follow the real estate market in the United States. When the market in the states is strong, so will be the market in the Mexico.

There are several developments in Rocky Point that have been sitting there with not much happening sales wise until recently. One such example is Esmeralda on Sandy Beach, which recently announced that building C is being delivered and that they have opened up sales in the D or center building.  It appears several have been sold.

Out on the Las Conchas side, Tessoro is experiencing resales as well as condos that were never sold.  Tessoro sits on a pristine beach at the mouth of the  Moru Estuary, which is great for walking, kayaking and fishing from the shore. The views from there are beautiful with Bird Island off in the distance and stunning  sunrises in the morning and sunsets at night.

Past Playa Encanto is the newest development under construction known as Encantame Towers.  By the end of May many of those will be delivered on the lower floors. The 2nd tower is also starting to come out of the ground.  This development is by Miguel Gavara and Mary Snyder, who developed Puerta Privada and others and have an outstanding track record for delivering on time.

As you drive through Las Conchas you will see several homes under construction as well as homes that are having additions built on.  There are not a lot of beach front lots left, but you can still find lots that have beautiful Sea of Cortez views.  Here you can buy existing homes or build your own.  Puerto Peñasco has a number of highly qualified architects and builders, so you will have a quality home.

Going up north from Cholla Bay, Islas del Mar is going strong, with condos or homes. Here you have a choice of lagoon lots or waterfront lots. It is approximately a 10 mile drive on paved roads, from the center Rocky Point. From Isla del Mar, your sunset views are unobstructed.  You also have the ability to see the Blue Herons and Egrets in the Lagoons.  You can also golf on a very challenging course.

If you are investing in something for after retirement, you may want to choose to rent your home or condo.  The rental market is very strong now and appears it will continue.  During the summer months, even though it is hot and humid, the city gets many Mexican Nationals coming from Baja and Chihuahua.  Years ago we had a high seasons for rentals, but now we have high season year around.

The realtors here are professional and will take the time to find something that you want. They are all licensed and are member of AMPI, so know that you will find someone you can trust and that walk you through the entire purchase process.

Many new little restaurants have opened in 2020 and 2021 for you to choose from. If you are looking for great Mexican food, hamburgers, fine dining, pizza or seafood, you will find something to please everyone’s taste.  Don’t be afraid to venture out of tourist areas for some great food at reasonable prices.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Mexican Navy Ship coming to Puerto Penasco

Mid May will be an exciting time for Puerto Peñasco, with the arrival of the Mexican Navy Ship “Cuauhtemoc” or as it is known Caballero de los Mares which means The Gentleman of the Seas.  It will carry a crew of 240 including 8 captains, officials as well as 100 male and female cadets. The cadets will be able to come on land while in Rocky Point to  learn about this part of the Sea of Cortez.  While at sea the cadets will undergo training and studies.

The ship will be anchored 1 mile offshore in front of the Malecon for locals and tourists to be able to view it.  This incredible ship has made 36 training voyages and traveled to 209 ports in 59 countries.  It has traveled over 5522 days at sea and traveled 705,000 nautical miles which is equal to 33 times around the world.

The history of the ship is amazing. It is 220′ long and 39′ wide and is named after Huehi Tlatoani Cuachtemoc. Built in Bilboa, Spain it was known as Celaya. It had 3 sister ships as well. It was launched Jan. 8 1982 and commissioned  July 29, 1982. For its 39 years of service is home port is Acapulco, Mexico. It is a Class A ship and sails under the Mexican Flag.  In its years of sailing it has won the Tall Ships’ Races two times.

Tall ships are amazing and are used many time for people who like to cruise, but want to do it on a smaller size vessel. Tall ships also can accommodate much smaller amounts of cruisers than a regular cruise ship,  thus allowing them to more access to remote areas.   You normally think of them for cruising not as a training ship for the military.

We are hoping to perhaps be able to go onboard like people of Rocky Point did when the Astoria Cruise Ship came last year for its cruises.  It is not often that the small ports get so much attention. As of this writing it looked like it was near Ensenada and then will turn, go south and come up around the tip of Baja and into the Sea of Cortez to Puerto Peñasco.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Puerto Peñasco says “Welcome Home”

Although Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) had a large crowd, it was not as large as previous years, judging from the photos.  The bars and restaurants that were open open were pleased with the business they had.   By Sunday most of our visitors had left until next year.  There were food vendors on every corner selling tacos, churros and hot dogs.  A great time was had by all.

At the same time the OAXACA Exhibit has come to town for a month.  They bring with them apparel, leather goods and so many crafts, cosmetics  and perfumes, artwork as well as regional food from the area and many flavors of home made ice  cream. They  open at 10 am and  are located in Shrimp Park across from the Municipal Building on the corner of Benito Juarez and Blvd. Freemont.  Look for the brightly colored tents.

The last Mermaid Market has been delayed from April 17th to May 29th.  So if you are here for the Memorial Day weekend, please plan to stop by and spend some time visiting with the local artists. The last show is always a fun event with vendors dressed like Pirates and always some great music. Here will also find the best BBQ in town and tamales wrapped in Banana leaves that are to die for.  You can also buy fresh baked breads and some of the best Marmalades anywhere.   They have them all to sample so please do, you won’t be disappointed.  If you want a great hamburger while you are in the park, check out the little white building next to the bandstand.  Here you can get a cheeseburger, grilled onions and great french fries for $75 to $80 pesos or around $4 USD.  They have a nice little seating area to enjoy your lunch and some fresh air. Stop by and visit Russ Black and enjoy one of his special Mermaid Margaritas.

Puerto Peñasco is rapidly becoming a year around wedding destination. There are several wedding planners in town to help you make you special day one to be remembered.  You have several caterers to choose from and you can find some great bands for your reception.  If you want a beach wedding, that can be arranged complete with canopy and chairs. Check with Olympia Watson or Shayna Sargent who are wedding planners and they can make all the arrangements. If you want to have your wedding at a hotel, check out Playa Bonita Hotel or Penasco del Sol Hotel.

There are some events coming up in April, May, June and July that you might want to mark you calendars for and get your reservations made.  April 23-24 at Banditos Roger Clyne Solo Songwriters Show, May 1 at Las Palomas is the Annual Golf Tournament, June 10th Roger Clyne Circus Mexicus and July 16-18 at Manny’s Beach Club is the Manny’s Country Bash.  Follow Puerto-Peñasco.com for more info on these events.
