Puerto Peñasco says “Welcome Home”

Although Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) had a large crowd, it was not as large as previous years, judging from the photos.  The bars and restaurants that were open open were pleased with the business they had.   By Sunday most of our visitors had left until next year.  There were food vendors on every corner selling tacos, churros and hot dogs.  A great time was had by all.

At the same time the OAXACA Exhibit has come to town for a month.  They bring with them apparel, leather goods and so many crafts, cosmetics  and perfumes, artwork as well as regional food from the area and many flavors of home made ice  cream. They  open at 10 am and  are located in Shrimp Park across from the Municipal Building on the corner of Benito Juarez and Blvd. Freemont.  Look for the brightly colored tents.

The last Mermaid Market has been delayed from April 17th to May 29th.  So if you are here for the Memorial Day weekend, please plan to stop by and spend some time visiting with the local artists. The last show is always a fun event with vendors dressed like Pirates and always some great music. Here will also find the best BBQ in town and tamales wrapped in Banana leaves that are to die for.  You can also buy fresh baked breads and some of the best Marmalades anywhere.   They have them all to sample so please do, you won’t be disappointed.  If you want a great hamburger while you are in the park, check out the little white building next to the bandstand.  Here you can get a cheeseburger, grilled onions and great french fries for $75 to $80 pesos or around $4 USD.  They have a nice little seating area to enjoy your lunch and some fresh air. Stop by and visit Russ Black and enjoy one of his special Mermaid Margaritas.

Puerto Peñasco is rapidly becoming a year around wedding destination. There are several wedding planners in town to help you make you special day one to be remembered.  You have several caterers to choose from and you can find some great bands for your reception.  If you want a beach wedding, that can be arranged complete with canopy and chairs. Check with Olympia Watson or Shayna Sargent who are wedding planners and they can make all the arrangements. If you want to have your wedding at a hotel, check out Playa Bonita Hotel or Penasco del Sol Hotel.

There are some events coming up in April, May, June and July that you might want to mark you calendars for and get your reservations made.  April 23-24 at Banditos Roger Clyne Solo Songwriters Show, May 1 at Las Palomas is the Annual Golf Tournament, June 10th Roger Clyne Circus Mexicus and July 16-18 at Manny’s Beach Club is the Manny’s Country Bash.  Follow Puerto-Peñasco.com for more info on these events.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Puerto Peñasco Q & A’s #8

Our readers are always asking  about what there is to do in Rocky Point.
From Sandy:

We will be coming mid December and staying for a couple of months. What is there to do and see while we are there?  The first week we will have family with little children, so need to entertain them.  We are staying in Las Conchas on the beach and wonder how far it is from the town.

Answer:

Mid December will provide you with nice sunny warm days but the evenings do cool off, so bring light jackets.  During the time when you  have the little ones here, you can take them to the tide pools when the tide is out and let them explore.  They will enjoy getting sea shells as well as maybe finding a baby octopus in those tide pools.  You can also take them to the aquarium which is located behind Capone’s on Sinaloa Blvd.  They will also have a learning experience if you take them to CEDO which is located in Las Conchas. Here they will be able to see a full size skeleton of a whale. There is also a gift shop with some great books on the area.  Another thing you can do with the children as well as adults is go back north of town to visit the Pinacate Volcano Visit Center.  Here you can watch a movie about the area and they are interactive things to view inside the center.

Biosphere
View from the Visitor Center at the Pinacate Biosphere

Now for the adults.  Rocky Point has 3 golf courses for those golfers.  One at Las Palomas, one at the Isla Del Mar and one at the Mayan Palace.  All of these will provide a challenge.  The course at the Mayan has several holes that parallel the Sea of Cortez. If you have people that love to fish, there is no better place than in the Sea of Cortez.  There are several fishing charters that will take them out and everything is included in the charge.  One of pour favorites is the Pancho Villa, which is a family owned cabin cruiser.  This time of year, depending on how far you go out or for how long you want to go, they will catch Grouper, Red Snapper, Trigger fish (which are not huge) but do put up a fight, just to name few.  The crew will clean and fillet them for you to have at your beach front home.

Dolphins
Dolphin Time.. what a show that went on forever.

For the ladies, there is great shopping on Rodeo Drive.  here you will find Fabiloa’s Beach Apparel and accessories, Su Casa (gifts for the home) as well as many shops caring items made in Mexico such as Talavera pottery.  A must place to shop is Mercedes Rusticos  located on the hill as you are coming out of the Malecon and across from the Friendly Dolphin.  Here you can purchase complete sets of dishes made in Mexico as well as other glasses and other things for the home.  Check out the Blue Marlin for the best coconut shrimp around.  They can also hang out at the Boo Bar, which is located above the shrimp market.  Sit out under the big palapa and take in the sunsets.  You will find plenty to keep you occupied.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Puerto Peñasco will once again be host to the “Largest Bike Festival this side of the border” and will be held November 7th – November 12th.  Oscar Palacio started this bike rally 18 years ago and we had  maybe had 1,000 bikes.  The main highway was blocked off to get the bikers to the right and give them some welcoming gifts as they donated to our charities.  I volunteered in one of the early years and when I see how far we have come from then, I am still amazed.  Now Rocky Point will welcome over 8,000 bikes.  The riders come from all over the United States, Mexico and even Japan.  The come in groups and many trailer their bikes and then ride them in town.  Most hotels have been booked since last year for this event.  If you don’t have a reservation, you had better hustle your bustle.

Sugar Skulls
These are some of the favorites you can buy around town.

During these times, the families go to the cemeteries to clean and paint the grave sites. It is here that the families of the deceased gather  to spend the night at the grave decorating and celebrating with the food and drink of their loved one. In the grocery stores you find the cute little sugar skulls and Pan Muerto ( a sweet bread) that is shared with family.  You will also find Marigold Flowers and Plants at the local nurseries, that decorate the graves.  At the cemetery you  also find trucks full of the colorful flowers.  This is a joyful way to celebrate the death of a family member.
Catrinas
Local people dressed as Catrinas.

The celebrations start on October 31st and is known as All Hallows Daywhich is a day to celebrate the children who have crossed over.  It culminates on November 4th at the Cholla Mall Road with the judging of the altars and the Catrinas.  Catrinas are the skelton figurines that are made of paper mache or porcelain and come in all sizes and painted in bright colors.  There a couple of places in Rocky Point that carry a nice selection the Catrinas and they are Latitude 31 Gift Shop and Mercedes Rusticos in the Old Port.

Garufa Grand Opening October 4, 2018

Garufa
Grand Opening Party Garufa.  Photo by Eric Brown

Ribbon Cutting
October 4 2018 was the ribbon cutting at a Private Grand Opening Party Photo by Eric Brown

The décor is warm and inviting with the use of brick work, comfortable tables and chairs, an open kitchen, handsome bar and lots of windows to make you feel right at home.  In the hostess station area there are chairs to sit in while waiting for your table.  From the front entry, you can see one of the 2 private party areas.  The lighting is soft but you can read the menu with no problem.  This time of year, dine on the outdoor patio and soak in the wonderful Rocky Point weather.

Garufa Inside

Garufa Argentinian Steakhouse opened their doors for a pre-grand opening party on October 5th in Puerto Peñasco to their family, friends and dignitaries.  As you can see from the photos it was a huge success.  They served aprox. 120 people in a professional timely organized manner.  The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the food and their wines.

Garufa
Guests enjoying Argentinean specialties. Thank you Eric Brown for sharing the photos.

The meal consisted of wonderful Beef Slider appetizer .. next came Empanadas, that were divine. They feature 8 different types of Empanada’s on the menu and our table was really fond of the Blue Cheese stuffed ones. This was followed by a lovely salad to share.  After enough time to let everything settle the staff came out with melt in your mouth Arrecherra Steak (which is known in the United States as a marinated Flank Streak).  The meal was finished off with like little round pecan pies.  The meal was served with a Sangria, a Spanish wine or beer.  They make their own bread and rolls, which is a real plus as they are light and tasty.

Simply delicious. Archerrea Steak. Photo by Eric Brown

Empanadas
Garufa offers 8 different Empanadas.

There wine list is outstanding and it includes wines from the Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico as well as Spain and other places.  The presentation of the wines is one of the most unique we have seen.  They feature a full bar with a lot of very nice Tequila’s also.

Wine Selection
Choose you wine from behind the glass walls. Thank you Eric Brown for sharing the photo.

A couple of days later the out door patio was finished and just in time to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather in Puerto Peñasco. They open daily at 1:00 p.m.  One thing that makes this stand out beside the food is that it has ample secure parking.

Planning to come to Rocky Point for Thanksgiving, get your reservation for lodging in early.  Many restaurants will be serving up Thanksgiving dinner so check out Latitude 31 as they fill up fast.

My thanks to Eric Brown for allowing me to share his photos as my camera has a glitch.

Fall will soon be in the air in Puerto Peñasco

The summer traffic is finally winding down and the schools are back in session, so that means that fall should be following by shortly.  With fall comes a lot of events for everyone.

September 16
The Mexican Flag is flying proudly all over the city.

If you have never been here on September 15th for the call to El Grito or the “Call for Independence”  it is quite a production.  This tradition dates back to 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave the call in Dolores, Guanajuato to gather all the people to revolt against the Spanish colonizers.  It is on this evening that all eyes are on City Hall at the intersection of Benito Juarez and Blvd. Freemont.  City Hall and the surrounding streets are all decorated with Mexican Flags and red, white and green streamers.  Normally they attach fireworks to the light posts.  This is the night where  the previous Mayor passes the guard to the new Mayor.  In this case Mayor Kiko Munro will be Mayor for a second term.  It is here he is surrounded by his family and friends and makes a speech starting at 11:00 p.m.  The crowds are huge so if you want to see the festivities, make sure to get there early to find a place to park.  Throughout the city there will celebrations in the streets with bands, food vendors and vendors selling Mexican Flags and apparel.  At the end of the ceremony, the crowd will sing the Mexican National Anthem and then the party  begins.

Garufa
This will be a must on your dinner list.

The long awaited Grand Opening of Garufa is  scheduled for September 28.   This restaurant chain from Zacatecas has been around for many years, but this is the 1st one opening in a tourist beach city.  While you are visiting Rocky Point make sure you add this to your place to have a great steak or seafood.  It is located next to Chango’s between the Sonoran SPA and the Sonoran SEA.

Planning ahead for a visit to Rocky Point in October  mark your calendar for the Dirty Beach RunThe event takes place  October 20th and will consist of an obstacle course and a 5K run.

Barb's Dog Rescue Online Auction is calling YOU!

Let me introduce you to Barb’s Dog Rescue, if you don’t already know her. Barb has been doing this for nearly 18 years and has rescued and adopted out  1,000 dogs every year for the past several years and growing.  She gives of herself 100% everyday to these discarded little souls. The rescue center is located just north of Puerto Peñasco, look for the big yellow signs.  You can donate dog food that you can purchase here and it is the Kirkland Chicken as well as Kirkland Puppy Chow.  About the same price as buying it at COSTCO and then having to haul it down.

As a community, we are helping her to raise funds to keep up with all the hungry little mouths.  These dogs come from all over the city and in some cases communities from outside the city.  People drop off puppies at the gate or drop off the pregnant mom. Sometimes animal control calls and out she goes to get them rescued.  In winter Rocky Point is full of generous visitors, but in summer many of the visitors go for cooler weather.  Unfortunately, the hungry mouths are still here.

Look at this face!
This little lovebug is a new addition at Barb’s Dog Rescue

There are so many success stories of puppies as well as older dogs being adopted.  Every Veteran’s Day weekend we have our annual Bike Rally Festival and this year will be number 18.  These bikers and volunteers not only donate but many also adopt.  One such adoption came from of the crew that registers people for the “biggest rally this side of the border”.  Below are just a couple of the adopted puppies with their forever owners.  As you can see both puppies and older dogs are being adopted out.  Adopt.. don’t buy.  Barb charges nothing to adopt and the puppies are current on all shots and are either spayed or neutered and you will have all the paperwork to take them home.  All she asks is for a donation of food.

Amador Dental Care has moved to a new location

The Amador Dental Clinic has opened it’s doors in a new location. Dr. Shirley Amador Garcia and her husband Paul Amador Chong opened on Blvd. Freemont in the Plaza del Sol Center early August.  As you  know Dr. Shirley is a General and Cosmetic dentist and Paul is a Registered Dental Hygienist.   This is the center that Chef Mickey and Mic Mickey’s is located in.  The new office is on the left side of the center facing Blvd. Freemont.

You will still have the personalized service as you received before or even better as they believe in dental care with a heart.  When you go here, you are treated like family.  They are committed to your dental health.  Every morning they have “huddles” with the staff to make certain that patient is #1.  They work with and train the front desk to be accurate, so that the patient doesn’t drive to Puerto Peñasco only to find there appointment was not entered in the log.  Because of their work ethics they treat the staff as equals and that way everyone is working as a team.

In their new location, with the help of a new machine, they can do total Panoramic x-rays that acts much like a MRI machine. It scans the entire mouth both top and bottom and can detect TMJ, infections, bone issues, sinuses and more.  It is totally digital and non-evasive as far as radiation goes.  When it is finished, it will show your whole mouth on the computer screen that is in each office.  This in conjunction with conventional X-ray photos will provide a total picture of your mouth and gums.  They also use a smaller camera unlike the  old camera’s that had a big piece of X-ray material to get into your mouth.
