Carnival in Rocky Point 2017

The dates for Carnival 2017 will be March 3 -5.  At a recent Press Conference, Mayor Kiko Munro, along with the Secretary of Tourism, Luis Altamirano,  head of Cultural events, Nina Mier,  Representative of DIF, and Professor Ceina (who has been in charge of organizing the parade as well as coordinating the events for the past several years.  The reason for choosing these dates is so that it will not conflict with Carnival festivals  in Guaymas, Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta.  Many people come from these areas to add to our parade along with bands, motorcycle clubs and stilt walkers and so  much more.  Carnival has been going for well over 20 years most of the time.  Mayor Munro stated that the plan is now in effect to see that it continues to be an annual event.

During the meeting, the subject came up about safety and Mayor Munro assured everyone that all branches of the Police will be involved, City, State and Federal as well as the Red Cross and the Fire department as well as the military.

Carnival in Puerto Penasco, Mexico
The parade will start near the baseball stadium as in the past at approximately 4:00 p.m.and proceed south on Benito Juarez and end at the big open lot next to Manny’s in the Mirador area that is being leveled. It will be both Friday and Saturday. The main reason to have it end in the Mirador area is that perhaps this will start to revitalize the area. The Mirador area for years was the place to be at spring break between Manny’s Beach Club,  Baja Cantina, Ice Box, Pink Cadillac. After Manny’s closed it slowed down  and the local businesses in that area suffered.   It is expected that on Friday night there will be about 6,000 present to hear the concerts by several name groups as well as have fun in the carnival atmosphere.  Saturday night they figure there will be over 3,000 people in attendance.  This will give not only the kids on Spring Break, but any RVer’s that are left to take in some of the Mexican Culture.

There will also be a stage set up in front of the Ice House, where there is always competition between the contestants and they do what they call “burning”, we they talk bad about or makes jokes about the contestants.

Carnival in Puerto Penasco, Mexico
Guillermo Salazar will again be the Eternal Princess as  has been the case for the several years. The costumes worn are all hand made made and change from year to year.  You can see the detail that is put into these costumes.

Carnival in Puerto Penasco, Mexico
This should be a busy time as ASU’s Spring Break starts on the 4th but many will be arriving on the 3rd.  If you know of “Spring Breakers” coming down, please ask them to be cautious if the parade is moving when they arrive.

Don’t forget to be there early along the parade route to get a great seat.  The streets will be packed, so plan

Rocky Point January News 2017

January has turned out to be full of positive news for Puerto Peñasco. Last week the head of Tourism for Mexico, Enrique de la Madrid along with Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich and Hector Vasquez, head of the local OCV office (Convention and Visitors Bureau) held a conference where they spoke about the impact on tourism in Puerto Peñasco with the 2 million plus people that visited the city in 2016.
In January, Arizona TV Channel 5 did a great piece on the city and the port. Yes, the port will resume once again and the first ship is expected should depart in 2019, with the terminal to be complete in 2018. Governor Pavlovich has put forth a great deal of effort in making sure this project moves forward and gets finished.
Rocky Point as it is known, has a huge Tiburon Baseball team following and the old stadium was usually pretty full, despite the fact that it was in terrible condition. Starting the end of 2016 all that has been changing. There has been an infusion of over $30 million pesos to renovate the stadium. The roof is being re-done along with plumbing, infield work, stadium seats and more and will now also have a sleek modern look. If you are a visitor or a resident, go out and show your support once the season begins. You will be guaranteed a fun time.

The Story of an Event Planner Olympia Watson aka Oly

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

Have you ever wondered what the difference between and Event Planner and a an Event Coordinator? Recently while doing an interview with Olympia Watson, I learned that as well as a whole lot more about this incredible young woman.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

Originally from Los Mochis, Sinaloa she attended college in Obregon City, Sonora and finished her education in San Carlos, Sonora. Between taking classes and working in sales at Realty Executives in San Carlos. She loves the hospitality industry and while working in Puerto Vallarta, she found her true passion, weddings.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

In 2006 she worked in sales for 7 months at the Sonoran Resorts. She said she was only 21 was shocked to see how people were just writing checks for a property that was not even out of the ground. Oly, as she is known in Puerto Peñasco, worked for the GRAND VELAS RESORTS and RIU HOTEL chain while in Puerto Vallarta in managing the events at their 3 properties. She could plan weddings for sometimes 2 and 3 a day in each property. In 2014 she came back to Puerto Peñasco where she hired as an event coordinator for the Sonoran SKY and held that position until July 2016 when she decided she wanted to follow her dream and struck out on her own.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

She is very smart and through networking with old college friends as well as other people she has met along the way, she has worked with some huge convention events as well as large family reunions. This past year she got invited to put on an event for 700 guests at the Rivera Maya and although she resides in Puerto Peñasco, she was able to collaborate as part of the staff to organize it. This kind of events take a lot of effort and a great team as you have to rely on getting the proper information regarding vendors for the event and making sure that everyone from the kitchen staff to everyone else involved is on the same page.

Wedding-planner-rocky-point-mexico (6)

She is currently working on a wedding in Cabo San Lucas where her friend is a Wedding Coordinator. To make sure that the timing of the event is flawless, she had a video made of a mock up wedding where someone walked down the stairs to where the bride would start walking down the isle to see how many seconds it took in order for the music to start at the precise time. She draws the venue space on a graph on the computer to make sure every table is where it needs to be, that the trash cans are not put next to the guests or food and so many other details. When she gets to the event she can also work with the kitchen staff to see that they are paying attention to details and that they are happy.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico
Recently in Rocky Point, she was the event Planner for a family reunion of 200 people which was held at Playa Bonita. At first they wanted a casual dinner, but with her advise and discussing things, they had 3 family dinners and lunches. She loves details, so she even made personalized ribbons with the last name of the family for the napkins, signs for the family marathon, she organized things for the children and adults to do so everyone had a great time. With the help of favorite uncle of the family, on the day of check-out, she was able to put together a Catholic Mass using one of the family members who was a clergyman, to pray for safety in their travels home for the entire group. Without her expertise, this might have been just another reunion, but now they had a reunion to remember.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

She feels it is important to be upfront and honest with her clients. If a bride and groom say we want a beach wedding with the reception on the beach in July or August, she said “It is my job to remind them about the weather and the safety and health of their guests during the heat and humidity” It is also important for an event to utilize a decorator to make the place look like what the people paying for have in mind. It is here where her services come into play as she out sources everything, thus being able to keep on top of the smallest of details.

Event Planner in Rocky Point, Mexico

She loves working surrounded with love.
So if you are looking to plan a convention, wedding, reunion or whatever, she is a Destination Event Planner, check with Oly at Olympia Watson Events Agency. You can find her online at/ www.olympiawatson.com or email her at eventos@olympiawatson.com or call her at MX CEL 638 114 3430.

Festival of Hot Air Balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

As you may know a lot of what is promoted in Mexican Tourism is for adults, but this festival will be for adults and families. Many children in México have never seen a Hot Air Balloon, so for them this will be quite an experience. Much like seeing the stunt pilots in Puerto Peñasco in November. This event will be held for the first time in the Northwest part of Mexico and the State of Sonora and Puerto Peñasco February 24th, 25th and 26th . It is being held at Laguna del Mar so it will have a stunning back drop for the event. This will be the first of the festivals in 2017, so Puerto Peñasco is delighted to have it.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

In the Untied States there are several major Hot Air Balloon Festivals with the largest being in Albuquerque, NM in October. Here hundreds of balloons ascend daily and they come in not only globe shapes but shapes of cows, pigs, telephones, Darth Vader, Tweetie, Kermit the Frog, Donald Duck, Panda Bears and so many more. There are also festivals in Yuma, Lake Havasu, Rio Rico and Phoenix. Normally these are held in fall due to colder air in mornings for ascension and the late afternoon. Although for the first year we may not have Special Shape balloons… who knows what will come for 2018.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

In the State of Sonora there has been events in Agua Prieta and also San Luis Rio Colorado. In the South of Mexico you will find large festivals in Guanajuato and Irapuato.
The Chief Pilot is Patrick Nilz and he is the only pilot to ever fly over the Grand Canyon in AZ, as well be being featured in National Geographic Magazine, the Discovery Channel as well as CNN and ABC. And Patrick Nilz Jr is the youngest pilot in the world. All of the pilots must be and are licensed to fly.
On the mornings of the festival, rides will be given to the sponsors and then open to the public. Even if the balloon is tethered, meaning it is attached to ropes and will just go up and down, try to do it.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

There will be events going on all day and into the evening of the 3 day Festival of Hot Air Balloons. The balloons will start to be blown up at 6 am every day (weather permitting) and will ascend at 6:30 am and the events will go from then until 5:30 pm. In the late afternoons and evenings you will be able to witness the Show of Lights or Magic Nights as it is called. Admission is $40 pesos or about $2.00 USD. Plan to picnic, take in the live music, have some great food and take in a car show. There is also a children’s area. At 7:30 will be the Exhibition of Light Show or as it is called in the USA a Balloon Glow and at 8:00 pm the festival continues. We are expecting between 8-12 balloons.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

A short bit of history on the hot air balloon is that the hot air balloon was the first successful flight technology to carry humans. The 1st untetehered manned flight was performed by Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rosier and Francois Laurent d’Arlandes on November 12, 1783 in Paris, France in a balloon that was created by the Montgolfier Brothers. It is the oldest form of human flight.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

On a personal note, if you have never had the opportunity to go up in a balloon, please do yourself a huge favor and take a flight. It is tranquil and yet if you are low enough to the ground you can hear the people talking or animals making sounds. I was fortunate enough to do this on one of my many birthdays and have never forgotten the feeling when you rise above the world and listen to sounds of the hot air bunners in the balloon as it rises and travels across the sky.

Hot air balloons in Rocky Point, Mexico

Please don’t forget to put this on your travel plans to Puerto Peñasco aka Rocky Point in February. Bring the family and make it another wonderful event for your family. Remember in February there are many events coming up such as The Taste of Peñasco featuring food from local restaurants as well as arts/crafts and more will be held February 18th. The Red Carpet Event to benefit the youth of Puerto Peñasco, is also going on that weekend, so make your reservations soon if you don’t already own a place here.

Santa and Mrs. Claus Arrived At Rocky Point Community Center

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

On Saturday December 3rd Santa and Mrs. Claus (aka Tim and Carolyn Grzecka of Gilbert, AZ) arrived from the North Pole at the Palabras de Esperanza Community Center much to the delight of about 100 children. Santa and Mrs. Claus along with several Elf helpers helped pass out Barbie Dolls and soccer balls. One thing that was for sure is that the children really appreciated being given a gift by Santa and Mrs. Claus and their helpers. They were so polite and loved having their pictures taken as did some of the adults at the clinic. A special thanks go out to Santa and Mrs. Claus for all the work in getting the toys organized.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

The Medical Clinic here in Puerto Peñasco is put on once a month. Over 200 people in need were in attendance along with doctors and nurses from the USA.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

After the medical treatment and toys were passed out, the families were treated to hot dogs, chips and other goodies. Also certificates were passed out to students who received their GSD designation by Director Ortega. This is an going program at the center to further the education of people of all ages.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

In a previous blog I gave you some insight into the clinic and what all it does for the families so much less fortunate than most of us. Since the last visit, trees have been planted that will provide food for the families that live around the center. It is hoped that they can become totally self sustainable with growing vegetables and fruits. Diabetes is something that is rampant throughout Mexico so when these families are taught proper nutrient diets, diabetes can be diminished. Being completed are the dental and physical therapy buildings. Next on the drawing boards is the plan to build 2 dorms for people that work on the center to have a place to stay.

Rocky Point Medical Clinics

There was a ophthalmologist who comes on the 1st Saturday of every month from Hermosillo as well as doctors from Phoenix and nurses this trip. Some patients were receiving physical therapy while others were having blood drawn and given vitamins and medicines. Thanks to Dr. George Stavros and his wife Susie who started this project just a short time ago. They had a 5 year plan and now just 2 plus years into the plan, they have accomplished that.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

As well as the medical clinic that is put on, the center feeds 120 people daily. They were doing breakfast and lunch for a lot of the elderly and the children and in many cases this is the only hot meal they get per day. However, funds have run low, so they are currently only doing lunch. As you can see from the pictures, the shelves are getting very low. They can take any donations of food and non perishables. A partial list of what is needed would be powered milk, flour, sugar, oatmeal, cereals,Pancake mix, dried potatoes, vegetables either canned or frozen, condiments such as Caldo de Pollo (like a powdered broth) , Garlic salt, Pepper, Salt, Cumin, Onion Salt or powder, Celery salt, frozen chicken, canned Tuna, pasta and the list goes on and on. They are trying to live on a $100 per week budget for 2017, which is not very much when you have that many mouths to feed. All the plants that are on the property will provide needed fruit as they mature and were donated by a local business woman. They have a fridge/freezer and microwave that were donated. With the money given to them from the proceeds from the Toma Color Run, they were able to buy plates, glasses and forks and knives and 2 commercial grade stoves. They had a restaurant quality double door refrigerator donated to them but it will not stay cold, so if you know an appliance man that could take a look at it and donate what it would take to fix it.. that would be wonderful. They also have a restaurant quality oven to make their own bread.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

If you can supply any of the items, please feel free to contact myself at 623-298-4284 or nocomosi@msn.com . We can arrange for pick-up and it will be collected and taken to the center. If you would rather donate cash, please let me know and I will get in touch with the person to get it to. To all the winter visitors here, if you do not know where to shop and get the most for your money, please let me know and we can go together.

 Rocky Point Medical Clinics

One last thing, on Christmas Day will they be feeding around 500 people from the San Rafael north and south area a Turkey dinner. They can also use Turkey donations. If you would like to volunteer to help cook or serve to those so very much less fortunate, please call Loly Martinez at 638-112-0517 and let them know.

2016 Bike Rally Success

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

After a year of planning, the 2016 Rocky Point Bike Rally has come to a close.  It was deemed a huge success by nearly everyone that attended.   Being at the registration area for nearly 3 days, it was so wonderful to hear riders say, “This is one of the best rallies that we ever go to in either the USA or Mexico”.  It is estimated that we had nearly 10,000 bikers from as far away as Newfoundland and Calgary, Canada as well as from Florida, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Minnesota, California, Nevada and Colorado plus a few others. The Mexican bikers came from Tijuana, Mexicali, San Luis Rio Colorado, Ensenada, La Paz,  Caborca. Guaymas, Nogales, Agua Prieta, Hermosillo,  Juarez and other cities in the states of Sinaloa, Sonora, Chihuahua states to the eastern side of Mexico as well as Baja California Sur.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

The 25 volunteers at registration greeted them as they got off their bikes and came to register or just walked out amongst them to say “Welcome to our home”.  Some of the volunteers go out onto the shoulder of the road and flag them in with a warm smile.   The registration was a mere $20 USD or $350 pesos which included the official patch, pin, bandana and more.  All the monies go to our 7 local charities to help sustain them through the year.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

On Thursday  the parking lot at Barklin Circle K was packed at all times and Friday was the same.  The rally team would like to thank all of those that pre-registered and registered on site.  It takes a great deal of work to make something of this magnitude in a city of about 50,000 people run smoothly.  Those that registered were given a ticket for a free ice cold Tecate beer as well as fish tacos cooked by the Culinary School of Puerto Peñasco.  The students did an outstanding job of keeping up with the hungry riders and received lots of praise.  We also had Barb’s Dog Rescue bring some puppies out and one lucky little girl got adopted by Rick Busa.  Her name is Sadie and after only having her for 2 nights, she has already found the comfort of the human bed.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

On Friday morning the riders were treated to a trip to the Pinacate Biosphere lead by local tour guide Russ Black.  This is a must see destination for anyone coming to Puerto Peñasco.  There were 53 English speaking riders and 10 Spanish speaking riders and they filled the movie theatre.  Everyone of them came back with a new respect for the Sonoran Desert.  Friday at noon the Pirate Ship El Rey pulled out with over 100 people on board and this is about full capacity.  Both events were included in the registration and are crowd pleasers.  Saturday brought the City Parade and like in the old days, the beginning almost caught up to the end. The people of Rocky Point line the streets and the riders toss candy to the kids, which is always a hit.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

On Saturday the Malecon which is on the water was packed wall to wall with not only riders but people checking the bikes.  One wonders how much money is tied up in all those bikes,  There were prizes for bikes in several categories and the Bike Show is always a huge draw.  All the bars and restaurants were packed and the stores did a brisk business.  The local charities cooked up some awesome carne asada tacos, Bloody Mary’s to die for and more.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

The final event was a World Class Air Show both Saturday and Sunday, right in front of the Malecon and Playa Bonita Hotel and RV Park.  There were 4 planes that are sponsored by Red Bull that do this stunt flying all over the world.  The event was sponsored by the local OCV (Office of Conventions and Visitors) in conjunction with the State of Sonora and the Tourism office in Mexico City.  It was indeed World Class!  We watched from our roof top patio and stood there with our mouths hanging open for the nearly 30 minute show.  Our thanks to the sponsors for giving the City of Puerto Peñasco such an event.  Hopefully they will come back next year.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

For the most part, everything went off without incident.  The two main complaints were not enough rooms and the lines coming into Mexico not being staffed properly and long lines and wait times.  Sadly these are two things out of the committee’s control.

rocky Point Bike rally 2016

We hope everyone had a wonderful time and a safe ride back to their homes and certainly look forward to seeing everyone next year.  On a personal note, I would encourage everyone from both sides of the border to register as it is for a great cause.  We know we only receive a fraction of those attending and would like to see it up to 30% next year.  There was also a Toy Drive and it received not only a lot of toys but cash to go and buy more and these will be passed out on King’s Day in February to the children of the various communities who have very little.

Although we have not finished up adding the money that will be given to the 7 charities, we know we are around $20,000 USD.

Gourmet Store "CS Foods" in Puerto Peñasco

CS Foods Has Expanded
I am sure that most of us living in Puerto Peñasco have at one time or the other been in CS Foods across from Numeros.  It was small and crowded and as Michelle Hopkins, the owner, said “clients came in, got what they needed and left” as it was so cramped.  Not any more, they took over the video store that was next door and now you just want to wonder around looking at everything they have.  The freezers will be labeled so you no longer need to open every one of them.

CS Gourmet Store

We recently stopped by CS Foods on the corner of Juan De LA Barreda and Blvd Kino, across from Numero’s to check out their expansion.  If you haven’t gone in yet… it is a must. Looks like a gourmet store with more specialty items.  They really needed more room and this is just perfect.  As Michelle and Carlos the owners said, “We didn’t know what all we had until we moved”.  Now things are on display and there is everything from those hard to find items to chef’s jackets and shirts, commercial pots and pans and more.
Michelle and Carlos moved here 10 years ago from Nogales.  Her father started the business 35 years ago and now their trucks deliver to over 36 cities in 9 states and as far south as Mexico City.  When in high school, on vacations and Saturdays, Michelle use to work with him, so that is how she got into the business.
CS currently has 7 stores with the Puerto Peñasco location being more like a gourmet store while the others are more warehouse style.  Puerto Peñasco has become the first model of the chain.  Other cities that have stores are Hermosillo, Juarez, Guadalajara, La Paz, etc.  Franchisees are taught systems, inventory control, about importing and how to run a business.  CS is a supplier to such chains as IHOP, Peter Piper Pizza, Applebee’s and Hooters in Mexico.

It is so great to a have store that carries a vast array of those had to find items as well as staples.  To help the American community for our holidays, they special order turkeys for Thanksgiving, hams at Easter and carry all of our favorite pies.  They carry a lot of seasonings as well as frozen racks of ribs, salmon, chicken breasts, butter, heavy cream, nuts, eggs, condiments, Italian sausage, bacon, sliced beef, pizza sausage, Blue Cheese and Gorgonzola, lobster (on occasion), dinner rolls and breads  just to name a few of the items.  Unlike the big box stores, one really nice thing is they make small containers of like Chia seeds, sunflower seeds, chocolate chips  and nuts.  They even have small portions of specialty cheeses.
If you have not gone to CS lately go over and say hello.  They are open 8-5 Monday – Friday, open Saturday until 3.  If you need something special, definitely don’t be afraid to ask.  If they can get it, they  will certainly try.  They are taking orders for Turkeys now so don’t wait.  We got ours from them last year and it was a wonderful Butterball.
So nice not to have to haul stuff from the USA anymore.  Thanks Michelle and Carlos and many good wishes.

This has drawn the attention of a National TV station that will be covering the event and really adding a punch to what Puerto Peñasco can do to show off for visitors as well as locals.  There is not a better time to be doing this as the city will be packed.  This will really be an exciting event as if the roar of the motorcycles isn’t enough and it is FREE.
