Thanksgiving Dinner in Puerto Peñasco

Soon Thanksgiving will be upon us and the weather is beautiful in Puerto Peñasco. The RV Parks of Playa Bonita, Playa del Oro and the Reef are already filling up.  Although this is an American holiday, restaurants here cater to our celebration.   For many the celebration of Thanksgiving is one of cooking or smoking the Turkey, making all the trimmings and have large gatherings of friends and family.  For other’s it is the one time of the year, where some choose to avoid cooking and prefer to have someone else do it for them.

Many of the RV’ers choose to cook the turkeys in their RV and then share with all of their group of friends.  One such group from Green Valley, AZ has been doing this for many years and now are  over 10 rigs coming down.  What a better way to spend the day than sitting on the beach enjoying drinks, great food and friendships while watching the Sea of Cortez go by.  If you decide to cook at home, the border side of Mexico has been allowing us to bring in 1 turkey as they recognize our holiday.  With all the fresh fruit and vegetables, there is no need to haul anything else down.  If you want to order a turkey here, CS Food Services are taking orders.  Give Michelle a call at 388-6556 or stop by (orders are being placed November 11, 2017). They will have Butterball and Hormel.  The Butterballs average 18 lbs and are aprx.$780 pesos, the Hormel brand is average 12 Lbs at aprx.$360 pesos. Cranberry jelly for a 14 oz can is $42 pesos and Pumpkin Pies are $260 pesos.  CS also carries butter, heavy cream, dinner rolls and a lot of other things to make you Thanksgiving Day a success.  CS is located off Kino Blvd right in front of Numeros.  Sam’s Club has turkeys already, but the are partially smoked and if they are the same as last year had some sort of gelatin covering them.

Spend you Thanksgiving Day on the beach!

Things to bring from the USA would be canned pumpkin if you prefer to make your own pies like I do, disposable metal roasting pans, canned or fresh sweet potatoes, cranberries or Pumpkin pies from like COSTCO.  If you like to add oysters to your stuffing, this is the place to get them right from the oyster beds.

One restaurant that has been serving up Thanksgiving is Latitude 31.  They choose to share their restaurant with families and friends.  They will prepare a turkey dinner complete with turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, stuffing, cranberries, rolls and the ever favorite Pumpkin Pie.  All of this for only $13.50 plus you get to share good times with other ex pats living here. Make your reservation today.

Another favorite is Puesta del Sol at Playa Bonita.  If you are staying in the RV Park and choose not to cook, this is a great alternative for you.  You still have a great view without the muss and fuss.  You can have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner or choose to have it catered and they have several options available for you.  Thanksgiving dinner at Puesta del Sol is $12.00 and complete with all the trimmings.

The American Legion is also offering Thanksgiving dinner.  Bring a side dish and it is $5.00 USD or $8.00 without.  They are located in the Mirador area of Rocky Point.  Dinner is served from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.

The last place doing Thanksgiving Dinner is Chef Mickey’s Place on Benito Juarez. The cost is $18.00 USD with all the trimmings and goes from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

One other thing that happens every Thanksgiving weekend is “Art in the Park” in Las Conchas on November 25th from 11:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.  Go out and see your favorite artist and do your Christmas shopping early.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

If you aren’t aware there is a new way to get to Puerto Peñasco from Phoenix.  It is called TAP ROYAL.  It is a bus ride that will give you 1st class service not only while traveling on the bus but while waiting for the bus to depart as well.  The cost is a bargain at only  $70 round trip.  The bus leaves the Phoenix terminal Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday at 10:00 a.m. and arrives in Puerto Penasco a little after 2:00 p.m.  It leaves the Peñasco del Sol Hotel in Puerto Penasco bound for Phoenix at 4:00 p.m. and arrives around 8:30 p.m.  Looking to make a reservation, you can call 602-272-3030 or in Mexico at 01-800-0011 827 or the Hotel Penasco del Sol Kiosk at 638-128-2685.  You can also go to www.taproyal.com and book your tickets as well.  Tickets can be purchased up to just before departure time as of this writing.

Recently the new ultra modern terminal opened at 2707 W. McDowell road in Phoenix, AZ for people traveling to and from California, Nevada, Arizona and Mexico.  This 5500 sq. ft facility is not only comfortable for the passengers who ride it but for the drivers as well.  The upstairs features dorm style sleeping quarters, kitchen and shower facilities.  Many of you probably have not ridden a bus in Mexico and do not know but the  back-up driver sleeps in one of the compartments below the seat area.

The  terminal, which opened in 2015,  is not in a part of Phoenix where one  would expect to se such a beautiful modern building.  The project was funded  directly from foreign investment for both the purchase of the land and the construction of the building as well.  Keith Rosenblum a consultant for Mexico based Transportes y Autobuses de Pacifico or TAP ROYAL stated recently that you will never receive inferior service on a TAP bus or at the terminal. The terminal will  be a luxurious place to await your trip.

If you have ever traveled in Mexico, you probably know that bus ridership in Mexico is still the dominant form of transportation.  TAP is using late model Volvo 9700 luxury coaches with panoramic windows 34 Amaya seats, bathroom, professional sound system, Wi-Fi and flat screen movie monitors.  TAP is also very safety conscious and the buses have a 3 point seat belt for your protection as well as highly professional drivers.  They currently operate 30 buses in the United States and over 300 run through the country of Mexico.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

Current US destinations are Phoenix, Tucson, Nogales, Las Vegas, Huntington Park, CA and they are now exploring entering the market in El Paso.   In Mexico they service such cities as Puerto Peñasco (aka Rocky Point),Obregon, Hermosillo, Navajoa, Los Mochis, Mazatlán, Tepic, Guaymas , Guadalajara and more.  With so many destinations, you can traverse Mexico for very little money and in comfort.  You can sit back, relax and read a book or watch movies.  With the price of gas in Mexico being so high plus the cost of the toll roads this is indeed one of the best ways to travel and it allows you to see the beautiful country side of Mexico.

TAP ROYAL Bus Service Phoenix to Rocky Point

Although TUFESA Bus Line out of Obregon has been doing Mexico – USA for over 10 years, they have not run any buses to Rocky Point.  TAP ROYAL has been around for some time, it is the first to do the route to and from Puerto Peñasco.

If you are thinking about travel in Mexico, start with a trip to Rocky Point aboard TAP so that you get a feel for the experience.  I know you will not be disappointed.  Come down and spend a weekend or a week with out breaking your piggy bank.  Hotel / bus packages are available so no need to drive, just sit back and dream of the beach.  Put together a group of friends or your family and experience the easy of travel on a TAP ROYAL bus.

Never A Dull Moment in Puerto Peñasco

When you live in Puerto Peñasco, people always ask “what do you do there all the time”?  There is never a dull moment and if you are just visiting or live here and you get bored, than perhaps this is not the place to be.  Most of the bars in the area have great entertainment almost every  weekend so plan to check out one of the hot spots.  You can also walk around the Shrimp boats and take pictures or just enjoy Rocky Point Sunsets from the balcony of your condo or beach front home.  The town is pretty laid back except on busy holiday weekends such as Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving.

One thing about a community of ex pats is that for the most part everyone is charity minded.  We hold fund raisers for our friends who may have cancer or other things that change their life forever.  One such find raiser is being held at Latitude 31 for Erika Reyna Castro.  Ericka is a young woman who along with her husband have run the dive shop at the Sonoran SEA.  They have two small children to take care of beside running the business.  Now she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 inoperable breast cancer.  So on October 28th, there will be a fund raiser to help defray some of the costs of the chemo and travel.  They will be selling raffle tickets for this event with some really great prizes and you need not be present to win.  This event coincides with Latitude 31’s Annual Halloween Costume Party which starts at 5 p.m.  Check out the flyer below for all the details, but there are some FANTASTIC prizes.

Latitude 31 Flyer halloween

The end of October looks to be an exciting fun filled month.  There are Halloween parties at Wrecked at the Reef starting at 9:30 p.m.  Southside Jillz will again be hosting her Halloween bash and if you haven’t been there, do plan to attend, costumes are optional and she does know how to throw a party.  There will be other Halloween parties, so drive responsibly as the little ones will be out tricker treating and are sometimes very hard to see.

Out in Cholla Bay, on the weekend of October 28th will be the Annual Cholla Bay Santa Claus Club Corn Hole Tournament.  The Santa Claus Club raises money for the under privileged children in Rocky Point and has been headed up by John Fowler since it started.  Check out the flyer and hurry to sign up today.

Love oysters?  The Cholla Bay Oyster House is holding its 2nd Annual Oyster Festival on October 28th from 3 p.m – 7 p.m.  It will feature all you can eat oysters, a clam boil, live music, Margaritas and a Tequila Table.  Tickets are being sold at the restaurant  and are $20 each.  If you aren’t in town for the event, remember every Friday is 50 cent oysters.  They are open Thursday – Sunday.  Great food and views so bring your friends down.

Annual Oyster Festival

If you love oysters but just want to sit by the water where they harvest them from, drive out the road towards Playa Encanto and go off to the right at the sign that says Oysters and Restaurant.  Bring your own drinks and enjoy the day now that the weather is cooling off.  These ladies make the best ceviche, clams and oyster’s you will ever have.

Also on October 31st go down to the Malecon  to the Boo Bar’s Cornhole Tourney which is billed as TUESDAY NOONER as it starts at noon with discounted drinks at noon and is under the palapa.

If you are interested in seeing a Art Film outside, drop on down to Puerto Viejo Café and Coffee for CineMartes starting at 8 p.m.  This is located across from Thrifty’s and the Catholic Church in the Old Port.

Dia de los Muertos 2017 Puerto Peñasco

Dia de Muertos Festejos

The Day of the Dead as it is known in Mexico goes back for centuries and was not celebrated in Northern Mexico until the 20th century, nor the United States.  Recently, however, while watching a Phoenix TV channel we noticed two different celebrations happening in the Phoenix area which is relatively new.  If you planning to be in Puerto Peñasco the week of October 31st, plan to visit the Cholla Bay Mall or Rodeo Drive as it sometimes called.  We have a lot of locals who have spent hours putting this celebration together.  Store owners there will put up “Altars” in memory of a loved one who has passed away.  Death here is celebrated and is not to be feared.

The altars will consist of 2 different types of flowers as well as things that the deceased person liked like food and alcohol or anything that held special meaning for them.  Many of the shops display the Day of the Dead figurines.  These figurines are made of porcelain and are like skeletons dressed in brightly colored paints.  The all have long boney fingers as you can see from the pictures.  These figurines are referred to as Catrinas.  The most coveted ones seem to the bride and groom and are difficult to find if you are a collector of them like I am.  There are several stores there that sell the figurines as well as Latitude 31 and Mercedes Rusticos in the Old Port both have great selections.

Day of the Dead Catrina

Unlike many holidays in the USA, Day of the Dead is on the same days every year.  It coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saint’s Day on November 1 and All Soul’s Day on November 2. In Mexico October 31 is know as All Hallows Day( the day dedicated to the children who have passed).

The shops will start setting up the “altars” on November 2 and 3rd and must be ready for viewing for competition on November 3rd before 4 p.m.  There is always music and food at these events.  Saturday, November 4th will be the big day and it starts around 6 p.m. This is the day the judging of the altars and Catrinas take place. Locals will also be dressing up as a Catrina and is fun to see. While you are enjoying the culture of this event,  you may also want to take time to visit the cemeteries to see how the graves are decorated for the deceased.  It is here where parties are held for the family members who have crossed over.

day of the dead skull chocolate

While you are in Rocky Point, stop by LEY’S grocery store for your Sugar Skulls and Pan de Muerto (Day of the Dead bread).  The sugar skulls are also a huge part of the celebration and are usually small and are made of sugar or what looks like sesame seed.  In the south of Mexico, the skulls are made from chocolate as well and are giant works of art.  Stop by Playa Bonita and see the altars in the lobby and restaurant.

Where is Puerto Peñasco, Mexico?

Many of you reading the blogs for the 1st time are asking many questions about how to get here and what is there to do there when we arrive, so hopefully some of your questions will be answered in this blog.
First of all it is located on the mainland side of Mexico in the northern part of the State of Sonora and is about 220 miles from the Phoenix, Arizona area or 60 miles from the US border at Lukeville, AZ.  It is surrounded  by the Sea of Cortez for miles in both directions.  It is where the Sonoran Desert meets the Sea of Cortez.
Rocky Point started out as a sleepy little fishing village, but has evolved into a tourist destination with something for everyone be it peacefulness or night life, we have it all from  Charity events, Bike Rallies, Fishing Derbies, Golf tournaments, Music Concerts and so much more.

Rocky Point
Rocky Point from the Ocean

Puerto Peñasco is  located 3 1/2 – 4 hours from either Phoenix or Tucson.  Where ever you are coming from you will have good roads to drive on.  Coming from the Phoenix you can hop on I-10 and then go south on State route 85 to Gila Bend.  From Gila Bend you will just stay on that highway and go south until you come to the Mexico border.  The drive through Organ Pipe National Monument is a very pretty part of the trip as it is lined with Saguaro Cactus as far as you can see.  If you are coming from the Tucson area you will take the road to Sells which will bring you out in Why and then you can make a left and proceed to the border.  If you are coming from Southern California, you will hop on I-8 to Gila Bend and then follow the same directions.
Highway 85

Once you are at the border, you will either get a red or green light.  Red means you will stop and green means to go forward.  If you have pets, they may ask for there shot records so have a copy of them ready.  While traveling through the border town of Sonoyta, the speed limit is 40 km per hour or just under 25 mphDO obey it as to not lighten your wallet.

Once you are at the border it is an hour drive to Rocky Point and it is a good road all the way down.  Take your time and enjoy the drive.. the beach will wait for you.

Needless to say, the main attraction is the beach and pristine Azure water of the Sea of Cortez.  If you have children with you or people acting like children, they can spend hours combing the tide pools or collecting shells.  This all depends on where you are staying.  The list below is just the tip of what you and your family can do.

Sea of Cortez
Horse back riding on the beach.

1) Go beach combing for sea shells.

2) Ride a Banana Boat.

3) Do a sunset cruise.  There are several different types of boats for this.

4) Go horse back riding on the beach.

5) Rent a rhino to drive around town in or behind the Sandy Beach Resorts.

6) Play golf at any of our 3 world class golf courses.

7) Go fishing.  There are several boats that will take you out for what ever time you want to fish for.

8) January – February, go Whale watching.

9 ) Take a boat to Bird Island and swim with the Dolphins and see the habitat of the Sea Lions or check out the new Aquarium.

Sunset

In addition to these, you can go shopping on the Malecon for Mexican curios or go out to what is referred as  “Rodeo Drive” and you can not only find curios there, but can have a wonderful lunch or dinner at Marachi’s and Tequila. Here you will also find home decor items from the south of Mexico at Su Casa. If you are looking for quality beach wear look no further than Fabiolo’s located next to Su Casa.

Depending on the time of the year, you will find cultural events going on all over the town such as in October with the Cervantino Festival and Dia de Muertos.  October is usually one the busy months for events as the weather has cooled down.  During the winter months, you will find The Mermaid Market” on the 3rd Saturday of every month at Shrimp Park, located near the entrance to the Old Port.  If you have time, drive out to the Pinacate Biosphere, it is educational  for people of all ages and is only about 15 miles north of Rocky Point.

There are many great restaurants in the Old Port, in town, hotels and near the condo developments.  There new places opening often.   Undecided if you want to stay in a condo or beach front home, check out Puerto-Peñasco.com to see what is available.

2017 PERRUN …1st Annual Dog Run 2017

1st Annual Dog Run will be held October 29th starting at 9:00 am on the Malecon in the Old Port of Puerto Peñasco.  The funds from this event will go to the local Pet Rescue Centers in Rocky Point.  As with many cities in Mexico, Rocky Point, is not immune to an over population of dogs and cats.  The rescue centers are hit hard especially in summer when all the mom’s have their babies.  There are always campaigns to spay or neuter your cat or dog, but it is a very difficult task to accomplish.   Now days the children are being better educated in the schools about how to take care of your forever friend, but old habits are hard to break.

Perrun Dog Run 2017

The event will be #1 a 5K run and #2 a walk.  When you enroll to participate in the run you will be looking to win either 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.  If you and your dog are not into running, sign up for the walk and this will be a short walk around the area.  The cost to register is $250.00 pesos and that is for the owner and 1 or 2 dogs.  The day of the event only cash will be accepted. If you just want to donate cash, you may take your donation to Rocky Vet before the day of the event and Dr. Adrian Sixto will make sure it goes where it is needed.  You may also donate dog or cat food, cat liter or toys at the event.

There are several ways to register for the events.  You can go directly to either Rocky Vet or Rocky Pet Hotel and Spa.  They are located about 4 blocks south of Numeros or you can take the road north of the rail road tracks left off Sinaloa and follow the signs.    Registration can also be done the day of the event on the Malecon.  It is important that you can show proof of current vaccinations in order to enter.  If you dog has anxiety or can become nervous, they ask that you have muzzles or e-collars for them.   The organizers do ask that you be on time in order to hear the schedule and you will also receive some gifts.

You can also go to the following sites to receive further information.

No pet… no problem.  You can still enter to walk with other pets and their owners.  This a great way to learn about the dogs and socialize with them.  There is a 2 dog limit per person as to not over run anyone.  All dogs must be on leashes and not be aggressive.  The staff will have bags for accidents and they will pick the bags up.  There will be qualified staff members and local vets on site to talk to.

Need a Pet Sitter?
Register for the PERRUN here.

This type of event is so important to bring up the level of awareness in the dog and cat over population.  When dogs and cats are taken in by the various rescue centers, they are spayed and neutered before being adopted and have their first sets of shots.  This is the only way to stop this epidemic of pets being allowed to breed day in and day out.  One of the local pet rescues will have received well over 1000 dogs this year and is working with a group that takes the puppies to Canada for adoption.  All of these puppies and “Senior” dogs have clean bill’s of health for crossing into the United States.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

"Big Ball in the Sand" OTL in Puerto Peñasco

In Cholla Bay is where the Santa Claus Club started. The founder of the group John Fowler and the group of people behind it, started it to benefit the children of Cholla Bay as well as the children in need of Rocky Point. They have always been focused on helping to make for a better life for those that are less fortunate. The Santa Claus Club is a nonprofit group and it relies on fund raisers, charity events and donations. John Fowler has been very instrumental in making weekly trips from the Phoenix area to Puerto Peñasco bringing blankets, clothes, shoes, bikes and numerous other things and takes his items to the poor barrios of Rocky Point.

Remember Rocky Point is only 1 hour across the US/Mexico border and approximately 4 hours from either Phoenix or Tucson. If you have any questions regarding traveling to Rocky Point please email me at Blog@Puerto-Penasco.com.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration

You may not know that Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a huge celebration in Mexico, Central and South America.  These traditions are said to go back 3,000 years. In Puerto Peñasco it is a wonderful time of the year.  The days and nights are cooling down so you feel that you want to be a part of these celebrations.

This is a very colorful celebration with altars decorated in family homes or businesses with lots of flowers mainly Wild Marigolds (Cempasúchil) and bright purplish red Cock’s Comb.  The altars also contain things that the deceased loved such as Day of the Dead Bread, alcohol, cigarettes, candy or any other thing that that person liked.

The holiday is celebrated in the cemeteries around Rocky Point  on November 1st and 2nd.  They coincide with All Soul’s Day and All Saints Day.  On October 31st the graves of the children are prepared and cleaned. Tradition has it that in November 1 the spirits of the children (Angelitos) will come back to visit.  On November 2nd the soul’s of the adults come back to earth for the night.  During this time the tombs and graves are cleaned and the families and friends gather to sit and reminisce about the loved one and they will have music, food and drinks while they pass the night away.   The altars are also decorated with candles and figurines.

In Puerto Peñasco, there is also a celebration in Rodeo Drive or also known as the Cholla Bay Mall.  The store owners do a competition of building altars and you can  see from the pictures, a great deal of care and thought go into these.  Here you will also see Catrinas and you see people dressed in costume and many of the ladies dress as the Day of the Dead figurines.  The event is October 28th and November 2nd.  Here you will find music, dancing, food and drink.  Go to Marachi’s and Tequila for a late lunch or dinner and take in all the activities.  Just come down and enjoy yourself and take in all the culture we offer.
