March will bring Spring Break students from many colleges in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Texas, New Mexico to Puerto Peñasco. Combined with local high school and elementary schools in Arizona, the town will be full of people enjoying the water of the Sea of Cortez. If you encounter long lines entering Mexico or leaving the country for the United States, please be patient and don’t jeopardize your life by passing in unsafe places (as I see this every time I go to the USA). Obey the speed signs in Sonoyta, so that you don’t get a ticket.
If you have not been here in awhile, you will notice many new restaurants, bars and coffee shops that cropped up during the past 2 years. Check MTZ which is located on the harbor where the Intrepid departs. The do a great whole fish on the grill and have a great patio for outdoor dining. In the Old Port Leo’s also has a cozy outdoor patio nestled under some big trees and they are serving up some great food and drinks. On the Malecon, you will find a new coffee shop right next to the park where you can enjoy all the wonderful coffee drinks available while you watch the dolphins go by on the water. Just off Calle 13 on Plutarco Elias Calle near Thrifty’s check out El Local. Here you will find breakfast and lunch made with fresh local ingredients. If you are a craft beer drinker, check out La Arena 3C which is on Calle 13 just before the Peñasco Del Sol Hotel. They now feature 16 craft beer from all over northern Mexico on tap to enjoy on their large patio or inside. Just off Benito Juarez on No Relleccion you can find Mongollan Grill & BBQ and it is getting rave reviews. The Rocky Point BBQ House is fairly new to the scene and makes great BBQ. It is located on Guillermo Prieto just south of Melchor Ocampo in the city center. You can also find the Rocky Point BBQ House at the Mermaid Market the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Max’s although not new, is now making pizzas in their new wood fired oven and do a great thin crust pizza with all types of cheeses and toppings. If your family loves to go horse back riding, you can rent the horses on Plutatco Elias Calle just past the turn going to Playa Bonita. They have horses of all sizes and you will really enjoy your guided tour. Also located on Plutarco Elias, you can rent, quads, Razors, Rhinos and golf carts. The city is also in the process of bringing back minor league baseball back to Puerto Peñasco, so hopefully you will be able to catch a game. The stadium is located on Benito Juarez and No Relleccion. Love to fish…check out all the charter fishing boats that will take you out for half day or full day trips. Don’t forget Rocky Point has 3 golf course for you enjoyment and they are Las Palomas, Isla Del Mar and Vidante at the Mayan Palace. Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning Sea of Cortez views. Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.
