Even though our economy has struggled for the last 5 months due to the virus, Puerto Peñasco is still opening up new restaurants and coffee shops. The latest is the move by Cafe Kilombo & Company. It made a major move from the plaza where TelCel is located to the former MTZ night club, which is located by the docs on the backside of Terra Nova Real Estate. Laura partnered up with well know Martin Martinez to create an inviting coffee shop that also serves up some great breakfasts. Here you can sit and talk with friends while enjoying all the art done by local artists or grab a book to read. If you recall MTZ had a huge bar, so they left half of it as a bar and the other half is the coffee shop, but the common seating area is very large and eclectic. Lots of nicely colored comfortable chairs and sofas to sit in as well a nice tables if you need to use your laptop. They have a breakfast croissant sandwich which features the largest croissant I have seen. The menu is done on a 3 sided tall chalk board and the prices are very reasonable. They have only been open a month but is getting a lot of locals as will as a group of American ladies that meet there every Wednesday morning. The coffee is a Chiapas blend and is excellent, reminds of Mario’s Coffee that was a 1/2 block away before it closed and Mario and Neri moved back to Chiapas.
Martin recently announced the opening of another venture next to Kilombo that will be open for lunch and dinner. It was previously a restaurant and bar and has a nice shaded patio for when the weather is nice. Because of his passion for products from the State of Sonora it will be nick named the “House of Bacanora”, as Sonora is known for its Bacanora.
Earlier this summer an outdoor restaurant opened on Blvd. Freemont called “Lobster and Ribs” and has garnered a lot of attention. Who doesn’t enjoy Lobster and Ribs, so check it out. It is on the south side of Blvd. Freemont heading towards Las Conchas and is just before Sinaloa Blvd.
There is a fairly new pizza place also in the plaza at the entrance to Las Conchas, called “Mamma Mia” and from all reports they are making a really great pie. Perfect if you are staying in Las Conchas and don’t feel like cooking or driving far for dinner.
Over on Sandy Beach, there are 2 new places that should be opening this fall. One is suppose to be like a sports bar with bar food located right next to Casa Blanca and the other a Mexican restaurant which will be located next to Garufa Steak House. There is also a small boutique looking hotel being built behind Changos. The virus and shut down of construction projects has put these 3 on hold, so not sure of the completion dates and names, but Puerto-Penasco.com will keep you updated.
On a side note, there is a great deal of building going on in Las Conchas of some very large homes. It is nice to see the new construction happening and knowing what a boost to the economy that is. In summer Puerto Peñasco gets a lot of renters that come with big families from Texas, California, New Mexico and a couple of states bordering Sonora in Mexico. Finally they have started coming back and renting, so our economy is getting another lift as many of them know how hard we were hit and buy most everything locally.
Even though it is our hot monsoon season, come down and enjoy the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez and our seafood and friendly little town.
