Mexican Independence Day Celebration in Puerto Peñasco

Mexican Independence Day Celebration in Puerto Peñasco

Flag
The Mexican Flag will be flying September 15th and 16th

Fall is the start of many events here in Rocky Point .  Mark your calendars if you are going to be in Puerto Peñasco September 15th and 16th and plan to take in the celebration of Mexican Independence Day or  as it is also known as “Grito Dolores”.  When this is translated it means Cry for Dolores.  This holiday is steeped in so much history in Mexico and is celebrated as a National Holiday throughout the country.  The holiday started in 1810 in Dolores Hidalgo which is located in the State of Guanajuato to celebrate Mexico’s Independence from Spain.

Miguel Hidalgo PaintingM

Miguel Hidalgo who was a priest was also a member of a secret organization who were working to break free of the Spanish ruling. It was Juan Aldama and Ignacio Allende who headed up the over throw but it was Hidalgo who put out the call to the residents to fight this revolution for freedom.  As you travel throughout you will see many streets named after these pioneers. If you want to learn more about this party of Mexican history go to Amazon where you will find several books that go into depth on the revolution.

Stree flags
Little street decorations.

The city of Puerto Peñasco will be decorated with Mexican flags that hung over the major streets. On every street corner you will be able to buy everything from little Mexican Flags to dresses and more. Usually in front of Bodega next to Sam’s Club you find a very nice selection.  Unlike in the United States where people fly the flag all the time, this is not customary in Mexico.  They fly the flags on major holidays.  As a reminder as this is a National Holiday, alcohol will not be sold, so stock up ahead of time.

Mexican Flag sales Mexico

Usually a day or so ahead of time, food vendors as well as vendors selling the flags and apparel set up around Shrimp Park which is located across Blvd. Freemont  and they will line the entire park.  There will be bands all over town as well as fireworks.  This is a great time to walk around the park or in the street as the intersection of Benito Juarez and Blvd Freemont will be closed and try some of the great foods from Sonora and the tradition of this region of Mexico.

Shout
The shouts you will all over town.

At 11:00 p.m. our Mayor Munro and is wife Linda Pivac Munro will walk out onto the balcony of City Hall ringing the bell and waving the large Mexican flag where he will give the call to Grito and then the National Anthem will be sung and you will hear the shouts of VIVA MEXICO.  The parties continue well into the early morning hours and there is music playing everywhere in every neighborhood.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.
