Weather, new restaurants and more in Puerto Peñasco… Ask Beverly

July 4th
Come spend a relaxing July 4th with us.

This time of year, we get a lot of questions about the weather and what new places are there and more.  So I will try to answer this in this blog. Puerto Peñasco does get hot and as I am writing this on June 13th at noon it is already 29 degrees centigrade which is 86 degrees fahrenheit.  There is a nice breeze coming off the Sea of Cortez and is expected to get windy over the weekend.  Fortunately the humidity level is still quite low.  Although the breeze is a nice relief from the heat, it does put a damper on the sunset cruises and fishing charters.  The humidity normally comes in around July 4th and stays until late September and sometimes into early October.  Don’t let the heat discourage you from keeping your vacation plans, as all condos and most beach homes have air conditioning.  Many of our bars/restaurants do close in July to give their employees a vacation as well.  But there are so many that you can always find one with air conditioning.  June and July are also Jellyfish season so be careful when swimming in the Sea of Cortez.  If you plan on swimming in the sea, you might want to pack vinegar along to treat any stings that you may get. Once you have done that WebMD recommends covering the area with hydrocortisone and a bandage. They say to check often for blisters or change in the skin and if the person has an increased heart rate head to the Cruz Roja (Red Cross).  If you are walking on a sandy beach area you need to  do the string ray shuffle as well, as sometimes they will be under the sand and are not visible until you walk on them, so shuffle your feet to move them out of your way.  This is not meant to scare you but just a precaution so that you enjoy your vacation. In the summer months, the sea will be very warm, but it is still refreshing so enjoy it.

Pancho Villa
Pancho Villa does both fishing charters as well as sunset tours

Whale Watching
Join the fun on the Eco Fun

While you are in Rocky Point, you can go horse back riding on the beach, ride on a Banana Boat, go fishing, para glide from a boat, golf, do sunset cruises or do the trip to Bird Island to kayak with the Sea Lions and their pups.  Another fun thing to do is to go to CEDO in Las Conchas to learn more about the area and see the full size whale display.  All of these are great for families and not expensive.

Depending when you were last here or if this is your first time, there are a couple of new restaurants that are worth checking out.  The newest is La Arena 3C located  on Calle 13 near the Penasco del Sol Hotel.  The have great food and it is all fresh including the homemade buns for their killer hamburgers. They have a full bar and ice cold draft beer served in a frozen mug.  Great food and service and reasonably priced and they  do take credit cards also. This place has been completely done and well worth making a trip to it.

Pina Colados
Lupe Castro has been on this site for over 10 years.

Grand Opening Party Garufa.

Next, if you like rotisserie chicken, a place that is getting great reviews is Pollo Pagago which is located in the heart of the city. It comes with all the trimmings and is wonderful.  A couple of places that are not new but well worth going to is Chone’s Sonoran Hot Dogs on Avenue Constitution. Sit down and have a real Coke Cola and some of the best hot dogs anywhere.  On your way back to Sandy Beach, make sure you make a stop at the Pineapple truck just off Calle 13 on Plutarco Elias Calle. He has been on that corner as long as I can remember and serves up one delicious Pineapple filled with all kinds of juices. On a hot day nothing is better.  If you are looking for a steak house, I recommend Garufa located next to Changos.  Have a prime filet that won’t break the bank and it is done to perfection.  They also have octopus and baked bone marrow as well as other streaks, seafood and pasta. They feature a well stocked wine cellar that you can see as you are dining and they feature some wines from the Valle de Guadalupe near Ensenada.  If you want a steak with a sunset view, go up the mountain to Pane y Vino, everything there is good.

If you are in the Malecon, check out the BooBar and the Satisfied Frog both on the water.  Located up a little side street is the Blue Marlin where you will find the best coconut shrimp anywhere in town.

Barb's Dog Rescue

If you want to do something really fun, drive out to Barb’s Dog Rescue to let your family interact with the puppies that are up for adoption and dog food is always welcome and needed.
