Barb's Dog Rescue Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

It has been a couple of years since I did a blog on Barb’s Dog Rescue here in Rocky Point Mexico.  Since that time I decided to volunteer to go out on Sunday mornings to hug puppies to help them know that there are humans that have great hearts and lots of love to give.  I am not sure who is gaining more appreciation the fur babies or myself.

Luna
Sweet Luna is looking for a forever home.

Barb Mumaugh has been doing this for nearly 18 years and is a non profit 501C cooperation.  Last year she adopted out over 1300 dogs.  Some of these go with the Compassion Without Borders group that relocates them to adoptive homes, but many are adopted by people in Arizona.  She has devoted her life to this and to see the pain on her face when a dog doesn’t make it, breaks your heart.  Many of these dogs come from abusive conditions that you can’t even imagine, so it is so wonderful to see them after getting good food, a clean place to sleep, health shots and/or repair broken bones from abuse.  When you adopt a puppy or older dog, they have been spayed or neutered and are current on all of their shots.  The only thing that is asked in return is as there is no adoption fee, is to donate  food or cash..  You can purchase Kirkland Brand dog food at COSTCO and bring 1 bag per vehicle as long as it is chicken, salmon or turkey based.  It can not have any bone meal or anything that comes from a hoofed animal.  You can also purchase it here at a store called Welton’s.   Welton is located across from Sam’s Club.  You make a right turn at Super Norte and an immediate left. You will see the big warehouse on the right.
10 puppies
This sweet girl just had 10 puppies.

Mom and 5 puppies
This mom gave birth last weekend to 5 fur babies.

It has been amazing to hear people say I can’t take one with out the other so they will adopt 2 dogs.  Once such couple had each found one that they loved, so after a few minutes of saying “we’ll take the one you have and the husband saying no we’ll take the one you want”, she looked at him as he smiled when she said we will take them both.

Another story was a little boy who had fallen in love with a smaller older dog and just kept saying to his mom, I want her and she loves me (as she curled up in his arms) and I will take really good care of her.  So they adopted her as well as another older dog and their grandma who had recently moved to Rocky Point adopted 2 boxers that came in together. That little guy brought tears to my eyes!

The rescue is in need not only dog food and cash for medical bills, but for volunteers to come out and help with the feeding at 5 p.m.  This only takes an hour to mix the food and feed all of the puppies, so I would encourage you to volunteer.  If you are only here for the winter, come out and maybe take a dog for the day for a walk on the beach.  If you live here full time, we can use all of your help.  Once you volunteer you will want to do it more often.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.
