February 9, 2018 will be an exciting night for over 58 other countries including America, Latin and South America. It is important for Mexico and especially Puerto Peñasco. This is the first time this event is being held in Mexico and it is the first time in the State of Sonora and Rocky Point. The event will be hosted by the Family of God Christian Fellowship. It will go from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

What is the “Night To Shine“? It is a night where young people from the age of 14 and up who are special needs teens and adults who can have a dream and they will have a prom. They will be treated to with music, dancing, flowers, food and walking down a Red Carpet. Here they can dress up in formal gowns for the young ladies and shirts, ties and maybe suits for the young men. They can choose from eating, dancing, getting a ride in a limo or just spending time taking it all in. It is a night for them to see they are indeed special and loved.
This is the 3rd year of “Night To Shine” and it started in Lubbock, Texas with the Springs Fellowship Church and is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. This year they have over 500 host churches involved in putting on the event all on the same night and same time.
There will be chaperones to dance with as well as each other and music to listen to if they don’t want to dance. Currently there are 19 females signed up and 38 males. They are expecting anywhere between 75 to 200 people to attend. Gowns have been donated and they have plenty of them to choose from, however, they are in need of apparel for the guys (long pants, shirts and ties, etc.)
In this small community of Puerto Peñasco, there are many families with special needs children or adults and this will be an event they would probably never have a chance to attend if it were not for this. In doing some research for this article, I found that there are some families who have not only 1 special needs child but in some cases 2 or 3 and even twins. Many of these parents don’t necessarily hide the children but don’t openly talk about it as they feel it is their fault. This event will also give the parents a chance to meet other parents who have the special needs family members, so it gives them a chance to talk and bond among themselves. There is an Apostolic Church in the San Rafeal that have over 30 special needs children and adults in their congregation.
I hope you will watch the 2 videos and see what this is all about. Perhaps you are Spanish speaking and can volunteer to help. If you are not fluent you may want to volunteer in food service, set up or clean up, go to the quiet room to sit with the prom go’ers in case it gets to overwhelming for them. All volunteers must pass a back ground check and I don’t see an issue for any of us in this regard. If you are interested in helping in any way and I will put you in touch with the person in charge.
After the prom is over, we will post pictures so that you can see how much fun everyone had and perhaps next year become a volunteer.
Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning Sea of Cortez views. Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.
