6th Cervantino Festival October 19-22

6th Cervantino Festival October 19-22

Cervantino 2017

Be prepared to be entertained and amazed as once again the city of Puerto Peñasco will hold it’s Cervantino  Festival.  This event has been going on in the south of Mexico in Guanajuato for years (XCV ), but in Rocky Point it is in it’s 6th  year.  It is a breath of fresh air to see the hard work of people like Mayor Kiko Munro and his wife Linda Pivac de Munro, Nina Mier and Victor Aleman, to name a few, who want to see the culture of Mexico promoted.  It is with events like these that residents and tourists can get a glimpse of the true Mexican culture.  Cervantino 6 will be held at the Plaza de Gobernadores, Plaza Colosio, Galeria de Art Municipal all on the Malecon.

The origin of the Cervantino Festival dates back to the mid 20th century when short plays were put on in the city center of Guanajuato by Miguel de Cervantes and they were called entremeses“.  Guanajuato is located in the State of Guanajuato and at one time was a very rich city because of the mining of silver.   In 1972  it received funding and since then has been known internationally for its art and music.  It was in 1953 that the 1st festival was held in Guanajuato and was called Entremeses de Miguel de Cervantes.  These short plays are still a part of the now called Cervantino Festival.  The event will be held in Guanajuato October 11-29.

Cervantino 2017

If you have never been to the city of Guanajuato, you should take the time to go, be it during the festival or any time of the year.  It is a city filled with culture and events.  The main part of the city sits on top of the streets that run under the city in what were once mining tunnels.  It is a very complex set of tunnels and best to use a taxi to get around.  It has so much to offer.

In Puerto Peñasco there is a very large population of people from the south of Mexico and they are intent in steeping Rocky Point  with some of the cultural history of Mexico.  The Cevantino Festival will be held in Puerto Peñasco October 19-22.  Most of the events will be held in the Plaza de Governors on the Malecon part of the Old Port.  It will consist of music, dancing and an art.  Here you can also sample some of the tastes of Mexico while enjoying the event and having the backdrop of the Sea of Cortez.  There will be no alcohol sold, but it appears that DIF might be selling wine and perhaps cheese and bread plates.  This is being done to help the bars and restaurants that are in the Malecon area.

If you have children and would like to bring them, there will be a Kids Corner, where the theater will also be shown. What a better way to expose children to culture of another country.

There will also be several other things going during the event such as Elite-Evolution Group which will present a show of 1000 colors, University of Sonora URNOpera Fusion (which plays music with Latin Rhythms and a theater),  Rondalla of Alamos and Nogales( the rondalla is an ensemble of stringed instruments played with what is called a Plectrum or pick). This originated in Spain during Medieval times. Omar Millan (Folk group from India) and Mariachi Brothers Durán and Aaron Durán from Puerto Peñasco.

In addition to all of this, there will be more entertainment, concerts and dancing put on by local dance groups and schools.  There will also be an art display, presentation of a book by Moka Hammeken, a presentation of literature and movies and a performance by Guillle Salazar. This can all be seen at the  Galeria de Arte Municipal and the Plaza Colosio located on top of the stairs facing the main stage and the Sea Of Cortez.

The event is free to the public.  Feel free to bring a seat cushion or chair to sit on.  Sit back and take in all of the events.  This is one of the best cultural events of the year, so please come down.  The end of October has so many things going on, so if you don’t own a home or condo in Rocky Point, make you reservation early.
