Cervantino Festival Returns to Puerto Peñasco
After a 3 year hiatus, the international famous Cervantino Festival will once again be an event to attend. The 43 year old music festival got its start in Guanajuato in the State of Guanajuato and has become one of the premier events to attend. Guanajuato is located about 5 hours from Mexico City and is steeped with history.

The announcement was made just yesterday by newly elected Mayor, Ernesto “Kiko” Munro who was accompanied by Nina Mier, City Director of Culture and the Arts and Ernesto Leyva, City Director of Special Events.

Although short notice, the event will be October 8th-10th, with all the musical events starting at 5:00 on the Malecon along side the beautiful Sea of Cortez with the Rocky Point sunsets as a back drop. What a better place to spend your evenings listening to music and enjoying all that Puerto Peñasco has to offer along with arts, food and drinks. Plan to get there early to get a good seat on the theater style seating and perhaps a cushion or chairs.

Among some of the wonderful musical entertainment will be our own World renown composer, singer and musician Armando Noriega, who was always at the Lighthouse playing that sexy saxaphone. I have been fortunate enough to have been friends with he and his dear wife Iva for many years. It was with great pride that he brought to Rocky Point the 1st Annual Jazz Festival in 1999 (as I recall) with such famous singers as Francine Reed (from Phoenix) and her band and many other great groups. Also, in the line up is Susana Harp and her orchestra from Oaxaca, Vox Urbano from Tucson, Agua de Coco from Puerto Peñasco and Alex Montoya, an up an coming singer from Caborca. When I say Mexico and Puerto Peñasco are rich in talent, music is one of those talents. The last time I went, they had students from Hermosillo strolling though the crowd dressed in different costumes and when they broke out in their opera voices, it brought us all to stand up and give them an ovation and gave me goosebumps.
Please mark you calendars and watch us for other up coming events such as Carnival making it’s return hopefully in Spring of 2016.

I think we all owe this new mayor a huge thanks for realizing that Mexico is steeped in such tradition, that it can not be let go by the wayside. MY hat is off to Mayor Munro and keep up the great work.
