Best Eats in Puerto Peñasco.. Part 2

In our previous food blog we covered the restaurants and bars in Rocky Point on the Malecon (Old Port area).  In this one we will cover the places in town and Sandy Beach.  Besides the ones mentioned you can find Taco places all over town so if you are looking for something unique, ask and you will be given another list.
Let’s start in City Central.

Pollo Lucas: This chicken place is right on Benito Juarez and is known for what else but Sonoran style roasted chicken. It is probably been around the longest and is located about 3 blocks north of Calle 13 by the railroad tracks.   Both tourists and locals alike go here and they are open for lunch and at night.  Eat in or take it to your condo or home.

Tacos Pablano’s: The original is located near the Catholic Church on Simon Morua.  They do the tacos on the spit and are both hot in heat as well as flavor, but they will keep you coming back for more.  There are several with the same name but this seems to be the original, so stop on by.  Eat outside or indoors.  Reasonable prices for the quality of the food.

Tacos Brisas: Located in Sinaloa north of Sonora on the left.  They have a variety of things to choose from and all are delicious.  Here you order and they will bring it to your table along with the relish tray and salsas.  Great food at reasonable prices.

Southside jillz rocky point

Southside Jillz:  Located on Calle 13 just before the Peñasco del Sol Hotel. Jill and her staff are very service oriented along with wanting to serve really good food.  She is known for her 2 for Tuesday Specials as well as her Sunday Ribs.  Everything on the menu is good, but these are 2 of what she is known for.  Last year they won 1st Place in the Taste of Peñasco for the ribs and it was the 1st time she had ever entered.  Here you can sit inside or out on the patio and play Horse Shoe or Corn Hole or any other games they have going on.

Max’s: Located across for the Peñasco del Sol Hotel.  here you will find great breakfasts and lunch.  They also have nightly Specials and pizzas. The owners of Max’s also have Bryan’s out on Blvd. Freemont and the Sonoran Grill at the Sonoran Spa.  Both also feature weekly specials.

Frenchys-Bar-Grill

Frenchy’s: They are relatively new having opened just a couple of years ago.  Sport bar atmosphere along with some hints of food from Canada.  They are open all day and almost every day.  Want to watch a sports game, they have enough TV’s for you to not miss anything.  They are located on Plutarco Elias Calle and the intersection heading to Sandy Beach.  Look for the Canadian flags flying on the right.

Puesta del Sol: They are located in the Playa Bonita Hotel and feature a really good Sunday Brunch Buffett.  The restaurant and bar have been around for a long time and many of the servers have been with them since they opened 30 years ago. Food is Mexican fare as well as fresh fish and shrimp.  They have a nightly Happy Hour with music by Rigo (who has also played there forever).  Here you can enjoy cocktails and dinner right on the beach and take in the Rocky Point sunsets.  They have the facilities for weddings or large parties as well as do catering. Credit cards accepted.

Great views, great food and great service.

El Tapeo: Located in the Laos Mar Hotel, here you find a large selection of wines and craft beer from the Valley de Guadalupe, Ensenada, Mexicali and Tijuana.  They serve small plates and platters the include cheese from the same region as the wines.  Thursday night is Paella Night, so if you love Paella, this is the place to go. They open at 5:00 pm and credit cards are accepted.  Check out their FaceBook page so that you can plan a trip around one of the Wine and Beer festivals they have.

Collins Cantina:  Collin’s is located in the Princesa Resort.  Known for their Taco Tuesday.  BBQ short rib tacos for $1.50 each.  They also have a 2 for 1 hamburger special on Mondays.  They start serving at 3:00 p.m. until they are gone.  Closed on Wednesday.  If you are staying on Sandy Beach this is a good place to go for breakfast.  Good service as well as food.

Sonoran Grill at the Sonoran Spa offers nightly specials and is only open late afternoon into the evening.  They have the only fresh pizza on Sandy Beach.  Nightly specials are Monday (Surf and Turf Kebabs), Thursday (Gourmet Burgers) Friday (Rib Dinner), Saturday (Prime Rib Dinner) and Sunday (Chicken, Steak or Shrimp Fajitas).
banditos Logo rocky point

Banditos: Best known for their live bands that play there, they offer American style food as well as a couple of Mexican dishes.  Sit inside or out and enjoy the nice weather and drinks.  Banditos is located at the entrance between the Sonoran SPA and Sonoran SUN.

Chango’s:  They are located across from Banditos and is a bar/restaurant.  Serving  bar type food.

Mare Blu Ristorante: Located at the mouth of what will be the home port.  Quality food and service makes this a special place to dine. Known for the filets, Italian fare as well as fresh seafood. Mar Blu will not disappoint you in the food or service.  It has a good wine selection where you can enjoy the wine on the Sea of Cortes view patio or go inside for a more elegant dining atmosphere.   They also cater events and can seat large groups.

Sally’s Café in Cholla serves up good breakfasts, lunch and early dinner.  Word has it they do a very good pizza.

Cholla Bay Oyster Company.  Serving oysters several different ways along with fresh clams, shrimp and fish.  Relaxing atmosphere and good food.

There are so many places to choose rom in Rocky Point, go to different ones every time you are here.

Whale Watching in Puerto Peñasco

It  is that time of the year when the whales once again make their appearance in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. However the main Whale Watching usually begins the end of January/March. It is absolutely amazing to see these gentle giants swim close enough that they can be seen from the condos on Sandy Beach.  In this area we have Humpback and Fin whales.  While you are in Rocky Point any time in the next couple of months, do yourself a favor and take advantage of one of the Whale Watching Trips.  Along the way you are also likely to have the Dolphins accompany you and they do put on a show as they weave back and forth under and around your boat.  Recently a couple of small whales have been sighted just off shore, but we will be in full swing to Whale Watch within a couple of weeks or so.  When we see them is up to the whales.

You can choose whatever type of craft you would like to go out on.  The following are the ones that offer not only Whale Watching, but they do Sunset trips, Bird Island trips (here you can enjoy the antics of the Sea Lions and their pups and a vast array of Marine life) or Fishing Charters.

"Big Ball in the Sand" OTL in Puerto Peñasco

In Cholla Bay is where the Santa Claus Club started. The founder of the group John Fowler and the group of people behind it, started it to benefit the children of Cholla Bay as well as the children in need of Rocky Point. They have always been focused on helping to make for a better life for those that are less fortunate. The Santa Claus Club is a nonprofit group and it relies on fund raisers, charity events and donations. John Fowler has been very instrumental in making weekly trips from the Phoenix area to Puerto Peñasco bringing blankets, clothes, shoes, bikes and numerous other things and takes his items to the poor barrios of Rocky Point.
This Over The Line Tournament will be held across from Wrecked at the Reef on Sandy Beach October 21, 2017 from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm. There is plenty pf parking, but get there early

Fall Corn Hole Tournament in Cholla Bay

I am sure if you have driven out to Cholla Bay, you may ask yourself what do people do out here?  The folks in Cholla Bay are a very active group and they are always doing something to promote the Santa Claus Club that was founded by John Fowler years ago.  In a previous blog we touched on the OTL Tournament the benefits the youth of Puerto Peñasco via the Santa Claus Club being held the same weekend on Sandy Beach by Changos.

The weekend of October 27th will be another Corn Hole Tournament in Cholla Bay.  This event will provide entertainment for everyone while raising money for the Santa Claus Club.  The fun begins at Baja Cantina on October 27th at 6 pm.  On Saturday the fun continues at J.J.’s Cantina in Cholla and ends October 29th at Dukes Sports Bar.  There are money prizes for 1st – 6th place and even a prize for the 1st LOSER.

Fun for all

Dia de los Muertos Celebration

You may not know that Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a huge celebration in Mexico, Central and South America.  These traditions are said to go back 3,000 years. In Puerto Peñasco it is a wonderful time of the year.  The days and nights are cooling down so you feel that you want to be a part of these celebrations.

Day of the Dead Altar

This is a very colorful celebration with altars decorated in family homes or businesses with lots of flowers mainly Wild Marigolds (Cempasúchil) and bright purplish red Cock’s Comb.  The altars also contain things that the deceased loved such as Day of the Dead Bread, alcohol, cigarettes, candy or any other thing that that person liked.

Day of the Dead

The holiday is celebrated in the cemeteries around Rocky Point  on November 1st and 2nd.  They coincide with All Soul’s Day and All Saints Day.  On October 31st the graves of the children are prepared and cleaned. Tradition has it that in November 1 the spirits of the children (Angelitos) will come back to visit.  On November 2nd the soul’s of the adults come back to earth for the night.  During this time the tombs and graves are cleaned and the families and friends gather to sit and reminisce about the loved one and they will have music, food and drinks while they pass the night away.   The altars are also decorated with candles and figurines.

Playa Bonita

In Puerto Peñasco, there is also a celebration in Rodeo Drive or also known as the Cholla Bay Mall.  The store owners do a competition of building altars and you can  see from the pictures, a great deal of care and thought go into these.  Here you will also see Catrinas and you see people dressed in costume and many of the ladies dress as the Day of the Dead figurines.  The event is October 28th and November 2nd.  Here you will find music, dancing, food and drink.  Go to Marachi’s and Tequila for a late lunch or dinner and take in all the activities.  Just come down and enjoy yourself and take in all the culture we offer.

Have your dental and optical work done in Puerto Peñasco

*Note: Dr. Shirley Amador and her husband Paul are no  longer affiliated with Imagen Oral but have opened their own office on Blvd. Freemont in Plaza del Sol  by Chef Mickey’s.  Please look for the sign that says AMADOR Dental Care. Please check out our most recent blog regarding this.*

Over the years nearly all the border cities such as Juarez, Nogales, San Luis Rio Colorado, Algodones, Mexicali and Tijuana have had Americans as well as Canadians going to them in droves to buy their prescription medicines and get dental work done.   In the winter it is not unusual to see several tour busses parked at the entrance to Algodones and also San Luis on a daily basis.  The come from the retirement areas like Sun City in the Phoenix area and other retirement cities.  Yuma has a huge snowbird population who migrate in their RV’s from all over to the warm climate of Yuma.  They drive over and spend the day shopping, having lunch and getting the medications.  If you think Rocky Point has a lot of pharmacies it is nothing compared to Algodones. Although Rocky Point is not a border town, we are now having people coming for a variety of things from buying prescription medicines to dental work as we now have a great deal to offer.  Over the past couple of years we are seeing the return of the tour buses to Puerto Peñasco and while here many are choosing to have their dental work done.   Why here you might ask?  What better of a place to have the dental work done and then go back to the hotel or condo and relax while over looking the Sea Of Cortez.

Looking to the future and talking with several realtors and business people, the consensus is that this growth in the medical, dental and ophthalmology fields could be coming our way as well on a grand scale.  There has been an increase in the amount of people coming here for dental work especially in the winter time.  They come on the bus and spend a few days enjoying the beautiful weather and then get their dental work done as well.  Many of the winter visitors that stay at Playa Bonita RV Park, Playa Del Oro RV Park or The Reef Park can now benefit from the new choices they  have.

Five years ago Imagen Oral opened it’s doors on Benito Juarez just north of Sam’s Club. Here you will find Dr. Shirley Amador Garcia and Paul Amador Chong.  Dr. Shirley does all the cosmetic treatments like crowns, veneers, dentures and fillings with composite material.  Her husband Paul is the dental hygienist. Dr. Shirley is from Columbia and Paul is from Mexico City and they met in Phoenix while working in a dental office.  From Columbia she and her family migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah and then she returned to Columbia to get her degree.  Paul’s family migrated to the North Eastern part of the United States but then his family relocated to Phoenix due to the warm climate.  He received his degree from Phoenix College.  Paul has been a hygienist for 20 years.  I asked why they decided on moving to Puerto Peñasco?  Paul stated he was working as a supervisor in Phoenix and never had time to spend time with Shirley and their 3 children and Dr. Shirley was able be certified much quicker here.  They also have a love for the people of Rocky Point.  They are full time residents of Rocky Point and plan to be here for a long time.  Also at Imagen Oral you will find Dr. Augustin Munoz who specializes in Orthodontics.

At Rocky Medical Center, we also now have a facility for things like hip replacements, child birth and more. Rocky Medical Center is located north of the city.  It features state of the art equipment and experienced doctors.  If you are full time resident of Puerto Peñasco, you are encouraged to stop by and tour the facilities.  Since the beginning of 2017 the have performed at 2 hip replacements, 1 hernia repair, 1 hysterectomy and 1 ganglion cyst removal.

Now Dr. Swanson has opened Oftalmalogia y Laser Institulo  on Simon Morua #199 (Plaza Mar de Cortez).  He is preforming laser treatments as well as doing cataract surgery.  Previously if wanted cataract surgery you had to go to either Hermosillo or Mexicali.  This meant lots of time away from Puerto Peñasco plus the added cost of getting there and several night s in hotels.

Please feel free to check out these facilities when you are in Rocky Point and see what they have to offer.  Remember we are only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson and 1 hour across the US/Mexico border.

Puerto Peñasco Real Estate on the Upswing

Sandy Beach
Progress comes to Rocky Point

Puerto Peñasco is where the Sea of Cortez meets the Sonoran Desert

Do you remember the real estate boom that hit Rocky Point several years ago?  People were coming down with their check book open and they were ready to buy and buy they did.  The thrill of owning a beach front condo or home was so appealing.  That was until the market in the USA went in the tank.  Those investors that were in it for the long haul have done very well.  Many could not and the resale market was indeed a buyers market but that is not the case anymore.  Prices are climbing and inventories are lower than they have been in a long time.

Puerto Peñasco Resorts
Beautiful Las Palomas

Speaking with Kathy Witt, one of the owners of Realty Executives, she pointed out that people no longer have to sell at deeply discounted prices and that the inventory in Las Palomas gets smaller and smaller.  It appears that developments that had been put on hold are once again coming back.  Realty Executives also has an inventory of homes in different areas and that market has also picked up.

For some time now the condo real estate market in Puerto Peñasco  has been doing very well.  However we now see signs of growth both in homes in Las Conchas as well as condo sales there.  In fact  Corona Del Sol was recently purchased by some local investors and they are selling at a pretty good rate.  Corona Del Sol is located on the left about 3/4 of a mile past the guard gate on the left.  It is nice to see that development painting and fixing up the partially vacant development.  Corona del Sol is represented by Rocky Point Best Real Estate which is located on Benito Juarez (next to Bryan’s Sports Bar).  Part of the success in rapid sales is that the developer is offering developer financing at 35% down with a 6.9% fixed rate and full amortization of 15 years.  These condos are prices to sell quickly as they range from $149,000USD – $189,000 USD.  They are located within walking distance to the beach.  The development has a nice common area with 2 pools.  In the very near future they will have a furnished model for all to see.

Sonoran Resorts have inventory at all 4 resorts, both resale and new so check them out as well.  The Sonoran SKY still has a few condos with developer financing with 20% down at 5.9%, 20 year amortized.  The other thing that makes these condos so attractive to purchase is that there is no qualifying and they are fully assumable.  They offfer 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, 3 bedroom and the end units are 4 bedroom and they all have stunning Sea of Cortez views.  According to Jim Ringquist, Sales Manager for the Sonoran Resorts, sales have remained very strong and are ahead of 2016 with 5 months left to go.

Move in tomorrow.
The last of the new resorts built on Sandy Beach.

If you are looking to purchase a home or lot, there is a great range of things to look at both in Costa Diamonte, Cholla Bay and Las Conchas.  If being close to things is not your preference check out Playa Miramar, Playa Encanto, Encanto Living, Luna Blanca, Laguna Shores or Tessoro at the end of Las Conchas. These developments offer tranquility on the beach. There are also still a lot of building lots around at good prices and in all areas.

Puerto-Peñasco.com gets asked frequently about how do you choose an agent.  If you didn’t already know it,  AMPI has been around here for some time and I feel you should choose  a licensed agent (especially if you aren’t buying in a development).  Recently AMPI graduated 26 more new agents in July.

So come on down and look around and purchase your little piece of Paradise that have clean beaches, Caribbean Blue clear water and only a  3 1/2 to 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.  Don’t miss out and  come see why we call it home.  We offer something for everyone from golf, great fishing or just relaxing.

MTZ Cantina hosts fund raiser for Julio Carlos Meza Mendez

Enjoy MTZ
A new venue for special events

I recently went on an interview with owner of MTZMartin Martinez, who was born and raised here in Puerto Peñasco.  Martin is also a licensed Real Estate agent as well as owning the place to go to for special events as well La Galleria on the corner of the entry to the Old Port.  MTZ is on the harbor side over looking the shrimp boats and sunset cruise boats.

Surround your self with a view.

He had opened Bacanora Grill but closed it while back and then recently opened MTZ.  The décor inside is unique, with the walls being decorated with pallets that have been painted, old metal barrels that now have been converted into hanging lights as well as wood from some of the old ships that make up the great back bar.  Upon entering you will find a large stage which features a really nice mural by a young local artist.  Out front, you will find seating as well, which will covered with shade screen soon.  So you can sit outside and have a drink while waiting  for your Sunset Cruise to depart or a night cap when you come back.  Inside it is air conditioned and has comfortable seating as well as a lounge type atmosphere.

Good times.
Relax at MTZ

After talking for some time about the city and the growth and things that come with growth, Martin explained that his venue is great for showcasing local bands as well as others from outside the city. They have hosted several events since it opened.  He has a passion for seeing Puerto Peñasco grow in culture and hopes to be able to help to make it better and introduce visitors to more of the Mexican culture.  We discussed what is happening in the Old Port and what is happening in our town.

The discussion then evolved around hosting a fund raiser for a Rocky Point native who at the age of 37 had a stroke.  His name is Julio Carlos Meza Mendez and he is the son of world renowned shell artist Julio Meza.  Most of you who stay in the RV Parks like Playa Bonita or reside here full time have seen Julio walking the boardwalk by Playa Bonita selling his shell art or have gone to his workshop to see how the art is created and probably own pieces of his work.  Julio has 8 pieces hanging in the Vatican as well as pieces all over the world.  Julio Carlos has his Bachelor Degree in International Affairs and is working on Bachelor Degree in  Law. His company specializes in legal advise in such matters as new and renewal of bank trusts as well as things like getting the Permanent Residency status.  He also offers bill pay service as well as being a general contractor.  His office is located on Blvd Freemont in the center where Chef Mickey’s is.  He will have a way to go to recovery but he  is in the capable hands of therapist Blanca Soto of UBR (Basic Rehab Unit).

Needless to say, his medical bill’s are staggering as he has been in the hospital in Mexicali for 2  months and just recently returned to Puerto Peñasco to get additional therapy.  His family is doing a raffle with tickets  selling at $200 pesos (they come in books of 10).  First place will receive $10,000 pesos and second place with receive $5000 pesos.  With  help from First Lady Linda Pivac Munro, the ladies from DIF are selling the tickets or you can buy them from me as well.  Proceeds from both of these events will go to defray the cost of his medical bill’s and assure  proper therapy.  The raffle will be held July 14th.

Art in the making.
Shell Art Construction

After much conversation about the plight of Julio Carlos, Martin and I decided to do the benefit for Julio and the event will be held July 28th from 4 pm to 8 pm at MTZ (across from where the Intripid Sunset Cruise departs) with music provided my “Puerto Luna” a local band that plays Mexican ballad type music.  The cost of the tickets are $250 pesos and include 3 beer or wine tickets, Bacanora Tasting, reduced pricing on drinks and food from local restaurants.  A bonus to the food, wine, Bacanora and music,  your ticket will be placed in drawing for a condo stay at the  Pinacate Condos.  We are doing a silent auction in addition to the relaxing evening. All proceeds go to defray the costs of Julio Carlos’s current medical bills as well as the on going therapy. If you have something you would like to donate, please contact me at (nocomosi@msn.com) and we will make sure it is added to the list.  If you want to purchase your tickets in advance, please let me know at Blog@Puerto-Penasco.com
