Puerto Peñasco's Founding Father's

When we speak of cities in Mexico and how old they are, we don’t realize that a city like Puerto Peñasco is still a baby.  It officially became a city in 1952.  In the late 1800’s – early 1900’s the largest city close to Rocky Point was Altar and that was the capital of the State of Sonora. It was here where the trains came from and it was the capital due to being at the confluence of the Conception and Altar Rivers.  In 1929 the closest city with a doctor was Sonoyta.

Over the next few blogs, I will try to give you some insight on the back ground of some of these families who helped to make Rocky Point what is today.  Let’s start with the name Palacio.  What comes to your mind of course is Playa Bonita Hotel and Playa Bonita RV Park.  It was in 1942-1943 that Melguizdes Palacio Valenzuela, the grand father of Oscar, Miguel and Laura arrived in town from Sonoyta. He came from a large family that consisted of 4 boys and 3 girls. It was in 1946-1947 that Oscar Palacio, Sr got into the fishing concession business along with another entrepreneur named Abraham Robles.  In those years the fish in the Sea Of Cortez were plentiful.  Mainly they were catching White Sea Bass, Grouper, Tutwaba, Shark, Shrimp, Tuna and Sardines.  The sardine industry was a huge business with high inflation.  It was in these years the Cooperativas were formed which gave these families the concession for shrimping in Mexico. In 1981 the private fishing industry became controlled by the feds and it is then when they got out of the shrimping business.

Playa Bonita is where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez

Fortunately at the urging of his son’s Oscar and Miguel, they realized the Puerto Peñasco could become a tourist destination.  The only other RV Parks in Rocky Point were Playa Mirador and Playa Del Oro.  So in 1982-1983 they started to build Playa Bonita RV Park. Quickly the little park as it started out would soon have all the folks staying at the other parks coming to check it out.  The park grew quickly.  During these years there were not a lot for restaurants other than LaCita, Costa Brava and Viña Del Mar, none of which was close to Playa Bonita.  So in 1985-1986 they built the Puesta del Sol restaurant.  Soon people wanted to dine outside under the stars and it started with one outside table in the sand.  More and more people wanted to sit outside, so in 1987 they added the patio as by now 80% of the guests wanted to sit outside.  Puesta Del Sol was the first restaurant in Rocky Point to use cloth table cloths and napkins and have professional waiters. It was a high end restaurant that served lobster and had a fancy menu.

In 1988 the first phase of the Playa Bonita Hotel which consisted of 48 rooms and 3 floors.  Then in 1992 the second building was erected.  By law in Mexico if you went over 3 floors you had to have an elevator so they contracted with Thyssen Elevator out of Tijuana to install the elevators as none of the large elevator companies like Ottis, etc. were interested.  In 1994 they added the 4th floor.  Imagine in those days you had no cement pumpers nor concrete plants, so everything was done with little cement mixers.  On a side note, it wasn’t that many years ago that you would still see construction with men mixing the cement on the ground and then putting in buckets where it would be pulled up by hand to the construction site.  Much of the material was brought in from San Diego and the floor tiles came from the South of Mexico.  Some of the current waiters that started at the hotel are still there.

The Palacio’s have also been involved in politics here in Puerto Peñasco with Oscar Sr. having held the office of Mayor of Puerto Peñasco as well as holding a congressional seat.  Oscar Palacio that we all know is the founder of the soon to be 17th Anniversary of the Bike festival also held the office of Mayor.

Some of the other names we want to explore in the future are Pino, Pivac, Estrella( owners of the oldest gas station in town, which is still working),Borboa, Uriarte, Munro, Bitin, Martinez, Sandoval and Valencia.

The next time you visit, go over to Puesta Del Sol and sit on the patio.. close your eyes and picture how it was so many years ago.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

In May the weather is still beautiful and the Sea of Cortez will be warming up.  Looking for something to do while you are in Rocky Point?  Here are just a few ideas.  Go horseback riding, ride a banana boat, choose from one of our 3 beautiful golf courses  (Las Palomas, Mayan, Isla la Del Mar) choose from of our local fishing charters boats, visit the aquarium or CEDO, walk in the tide pools, go looking for Sand Dollars in Cholla Bay, shop on Rodeo Drive or the Malecon (if you can get down there), visit the Pinacate Biosphere or just sit on the beach and people watch.  Puerto Peñasco has so much to offer.  Also plan to have breakfast lunch or dinner at one of our many great restaurants.

Sea of Cortez

As you make your trip to Puerto Peñasco, please remember you will not be on the roads alone, so plan on lengthy delays coming in and going back to the USA.  As I always say, “Remember all those wonderful people you crept along with on the way in…. well guess what, you will see them again on your way home.  Drive with caution as the beach and the cold beer can and will be waiting for you.

Once you are here and settled in, it is important to realize how many people descend on this one time sleepy little village.  Don’t take needless chances passing autos or trucks, it is not worth it.  Also it is important to know that the road between Playa Bonita and the end of Sandy Beach will be packed at all times.  Yes it is a divided road but you still have to exercise caution when driving and even though you may not be impaired, the person behind you might be.  Have a designated driver if you all are planning to par take in adult beverages.  Better yet, take a cab then everyone can have fun.  If you are going to any place on the way to Cholla Bay, please remember that when you are coming back if it is dark, you come off of dirt onto pavement right in front of Esmeralda and that is a divided road.

Before leaving the USA, you need to buy Mexican Auto Insurance.  This can be purchased online or in Ajo at Ajo Insurance Center, Gila Bend Insurance Center or any of the other places that sell Mexican Insurance.  It would be recommended if you have a newer vehicle that has a loan on, make certain to buy full coverage.  By law you must have Mexican Insurance to meet the Mexican Liability.  Liability insurance only will do nothing for you vehicle so that is why you should buy full coverage.  Ajo Insurance will  leave your policy in a box in case you come after hours or you can print it online if you are buying it online.

When crossing into Mexico at Lukeville/Sonoyta the speed limit is 40 Km per hour or keep it under 24 mph or you will most likely be ticketed.  There is a Red Cross station that collect donations in Sonoyta and there is a STOP sign there that you must stop for even if you don’t donate.  When you arrive in Rocky Point, they are many new stop signs so be on the lookout.

We welcome you to our home town so please come and enjoy everything we have to offer.

Best Eats in Puerto Peñasco.. Part 2

In our previous food blog we covered the restaurants and bars in Rocky Point on the Malecon (Old Port area).  In this one we will cover the places in town and Sandy Beach.  Besides the ones mentioned you can find Taco places all over town so if you are looking for something unique, ask and you will be given another list.
Let’s start in City Central.

Pollo Lucas: This chicken place is right on Benito Juarez and is known for what else but Sonoran style roasted chicken. It is probably been around the longest and is located about 3 blocks north of Calle 13 by the railroad tracks.   Both tourists and locals alike go here and they are open for lunch and at night.  Eat in or take it to your condo or home.

Tacos Pablano’s: The original is located near the Catholic Church on Simon Morua.  They do the tacos on the spit and are both hot in heat as well as flavor, but they will keep you coming back for more.  There are several with the same name but this seems to be the original, so stop on by.  Eat outside or indoors.  Reasonable prices for the quality of the food.

Tacos Brisas: Located in Sinaloa north of Sonora on the left.  They have a variety of things to choose from and all are delicious.  Here you order and they will bring it to your table along with the relish tray and salsas.  Great food at reasonable prices.

Southside jillz rocky point

Southside Jillz:  Located on Calle 13 just before the Peñasco del Sol Hotel. Jill and her staff are very service oriented along with wanting to serve really good food.  She is known for her 2 for Tuesday Specials as well as her Sunday Ribs.  Everything on the menu is good, but these are 2 of what she is known for.  Last year they won 1st Place in the Taste of Peñasco for the ribs and it was the 1st time she had ever entered.  Here you can sit inside or out on the patio and play Horse Shoe or Corn Hole or any other games they have going on.

maxs web badge-u69

Max’s: Located across for the Peñasco del Sol Hotel.  here you will find great breakfasts and lunch.  They also have nightly Specials and pizzas. The owners of Max’s also have Bryan’s out on Blvd. Freemont and the Sonoran Grill at the Sonoran Spa.  Both also feature weekly specials.

Frenchys-Bar-Grill

Frenchy’s: They are relatively new having opened just a couple of years ago.  Sport bar atmosphere along with some hints of food from Canada.  They are open all day and almost every day.  Want to watch a sports game, they have enough TV’s for you to not miss anything.  They are located on Plutarco Elias Calle and the intersection heading to Sandy Beach.  Look for the Canadian flags flying on the right.

Puesta del Sol: They are located in the Playa Bonita Hotel and feature a really good Sunday Brunch Buffett.  The restaurant and bar have been around for a long time and many of the servers have been with them since they opened 30 years ago. Food is Mexican fare as well as fresh fish and shrimp.  They have a nightly Happy Hour with music by Rigo (who has also played there forever).  Here you can enjoy cocktails and dinner right on the beach and take in the Rocky Point sunsets.  They have the facilities for weddings or large parties as well as do catering. Credit cards accepted.

Great views, great food and great service.

El Tapeo: Located in the Laos Mar Hotel, here you find a large selection of wines and craft beer from the Valley de Guadalupe, Ensenada, Mexicali and Tijuana.  They serve small plates and platters the include cheese from the same region as the wines.  Thursday night is Paella Night, so if you love Paella, this is the place to go. They open at 5:00 pm and credit cards are accepted.  Check out their FaceBook page so that you can plan a trip around one of the Wine and Beer festivals they have.

Collins Cantina:  Collin’s is located in the Princesa Resort.  Known for their Taco Tuesday.  BBQ short rib tacos for $1.50 each.  They also have a 2 for 1 hamburger special on Mondays.  They start serving at 3:00 p.m. until they are gone.  Closed on Wednesday.  If you are staying on Sandy Beach this is a good place to go for breakfast.  Good service as well as food.

Sonoran Grill at the Sonoran Spa offers nightly specials and is only open late afternoon into the evening.  They have the only fresh pizza on Sandy Beach.  Nightly specials are Monday (Surf and Turf Kebabs), Thursday (Gourmet Burgers) Friday (Rib Dinner), Saturday (Prime Rib Dinner) and Sunday (Chicken, Steak or Shrimp Fajitas).
banditos Logo rocky point

Banditos: Best known for their live bands that play there, they offer American style food as well as a couple of Mexican dishes.  Sit inside or out and enjoy the nice weather and drinks.  Banditos is located at the entrance between the Sonoran SPA and Sonoran SUN.

Chango’s:  They are located across from Banditos and is a bar/restaurant.  Serving  bar type food.

Chango's
Chango’s on Sandy Beach

Mare Blu Ristorante: Located at the mouth of what will be the home port.  Quality food and service makes this a special place to dine. Known for the filets, Italian fare as well as fresh seafood. Mar Blu will not disappoint you in the food or service.  It has a good wine selection where you can enjoy the wine on the Sea of Cortes view patio or go inside for a more elegant dining atmosphere.   They also cater events and can seat large groups.

Sally’s Café in Cholla serves up good breakfasts, lunch and early dinner.  Word has it they do a very good pizza.

Cholla Bay Oyster Company.  Serving oysters several different ways along with fresh clams, shrimp and fish.  Relaxing atmosphere and good food.

There are so many places to choose rom in Rocky Point, go to different ones every time you are here.

Getting to Know the Rocky Point Nightlife

If you love to party, meet new people, dancing, drinking, going out and cutting loose there is definitely a scene here to get comfortable and enjoy the night. With spring time being just around the corner, night life in Rocky Point is one of the wonderful things you can enjoy on your vacation.  El Mirador which is considered the main strip for clubs is the place you want to check out.
Some night clubs have special guidelines in order to get int the club. Dress conservatively for the culture. Wear the right clothes and shoes, many times we have heard of people not being able to enter a club because of not wearing the right shoes.  Sneakers in these types of clubs are a big no-no.  Security can get a bit strict when it comes to that.  Always make sure to have a picture I.D. even if you’re of age, and most important of all make sure to have money for drinks.  For women don’t carry a purse, but do carry money, credit cards, and I.D. in a small waist belt if possible. Now don’t forget to have your cell phone fully charged for that right picture moment or to add fellow clubbers phone number to your contacts.  There have also been moments when clubbers even carry small personal or business cards. A wise decision for those that have much more experience in the night life scene.
pink cadillac rocky point
Once you enter the club the dance floor is calling your name, don’t dive out onto the dance floor. Relax; give yourself time to check out what’s going on.  Buy yourself a drink and listen to the tunes from the dj. Let your body feel the music’s rhythm, get that dancing mood started for a fun night ahead.  Never drink too much, if possible drink less than what you would at home.  You want to maintain a straight posture in any case a surprising situation comes up. For a word of advice make sure to always notice where the exit signs are in any case something goes wrong you know where to head out to.
Don’t forget to stop by the taco stands that are usually always in front of the clubs after a night out with friends.  So go enjoy the night life scene in any of the clubs Rocky Point has to offer and always remember to be safe.

Labor Day Punky Reggae Party

Labor Day is the busiest times of the year of the year in Rocky Point. With nearly every resort at full occupancy every year, it brings an atmosphere unlike any other! With all kinds of great Labor Day Parties and festivities planned all throughout the weekend, you are going to have a lot to choose from! Labor-Day-Beach-Party-Flyer2Let me help narrow your decision and tell you that the Punky Reggae Beach Party is going to the best party all weekend. This Reggae Beach Party is planned at Manny’s Beach Club on Saturday, August 31st. With 2 great bands from Arizona and no cover charge, this beach party is a no brainer! And it’s all ages show, so anybody can go and enjoy the music. The first band that is playing is RAC from Glendale, AZ. A 5 piece reggae dub band returns to Rocky Point and are sure to bring their fresh reggae vibes back to Rocky Point. To hear some of their tunes check out their Facebook. Also playing the show is Valley Love. Another AZ local, this 5 piece band plays a mix of rock, jazz, blues, reggae, and hip hop. If you want to get a taste of their blend check out their ReverbNation. Both of these bands have made a name for themselves in the local reggae scene in Arizona and are going to give Rocky Point a taste of some Arizona “desert reggae.”
As if a free reggae concert wasn’t cool enough, Manny’s Beach Club has added a beer pong tournament that will go throughout the night! Who knows you might face off with some of the members of RAC and Valley Love! One Love Events Promotions is throwing this event and you can find more info about them on their Facebook.
If you are thinking about making the trip down to Rocky Point check out our website for reservations or call us toll free at 1-800-997-9431. This is a weekend in Puerto Penasco that you do not want to miss!
