Puerto Peñasco Q & A’s #8

Our readers are always asking  about what there is to do in Rocky Point.
From Sandy:

We will be coming mid December and staying for a couple of months. What is there to do and see while we are there?  The first week we will have family with little children, so need to entertain them.  We are staying in Las Conchas on the beach and wonder how far it is from the town.

Answer:

Mid December will provide you with nice sunny warm days but the evenings do cool off, so bring light jackets.  During the time when you  have the little ones here, you can take them to the tide pools when the tide is out and let them explore.  They will enjoy getting sea shells as well as maybe finding a baby octopus in those tide pools.  You can also take them to the aquarium which is located behind Capone’s on Sinaloa Blvd.  They will also have a learning experience if you take them to CEDO which is located in Las Conchas. Here they will be able to see a full size skeleton of a whale. There is also a gift shop with some great books on the area.  Another thing you can do with the children as well as adults is go back north of town to visit the Pinacate Volcano Visit Center.  Here you can watch a movie about the area and they are interactive things to view inside the center.

Now for the adults.  Rocky Point has 3 golf courses for those golfers.  One at Las Palomas, one at the Isla Del Mar and one at the Mayan Palace.  All of these will provide a challenge.  The course at the Mayan has several holes that parallel the Sea of Cortez. If you have people that love to fish, there is no better place than in the Sea of Cortez.  There are several fishing charters that will take them out and everything is included in the charge.  One of pour favorites is the Pancho Villa, which is a family owned cabin cruiser.  This time of year, depending on how far you go out or for how long you want to go, they will catch Grouper, Red Snapper, Trigger fish (which are not huge) but do put up a fight, just to name few.  The crew will clean and fillet them for you to have at your beach front home.

Dolphins
Dolphin Time.. what a show that went on forever.

For the ladies, there is great shopping on Rodeo Drive.  here you will find Fabiloa’s Beach Apparel and accessories, Su Casa (gifts for the home) as well as many shops caring items made in Mexico such as Talavera pottery.  A must place to shop is Mercedes Rusticos  located on the hill as you are coming out of the Malecon and across from the Friendly Dolphin.  Here you can purchase complete sets of dishes made in Mexico as well as other glasses and other things for the home.  Check out the Blue Marlin for the best coconut shrimp around.  They can also hang out at the Boo Bar, which is located above the shrimp market.  Sit out under the big palapa and take in the sunsets.  You will find plenty to keep you occupied.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Roclky Point Rally
Ready to Rumble in Puerto Penasco

Puerto Peñasco will once again be host to the “Largest Bike Festival this side of the border” and will be held November 7th – November 12th.  Oscar Palacio started this bike rally 18 years ago and we had  maybe had 1,000 bikes.  The main highway was blocked off to get the bikers to the right and give them some welcoming gifts as they donated to our charities.  I volunteered in one of the early years and when I see how far we have come from then, I am still amazed.  Now Rocky Point will welcome over 8,000 bikes.  The riders come from all over the United States, Mexico and even Japan.  The come in groups and many trailer their bikes and then ride them in town.  Most hotels have been booked since last year for this event.  If you don’t have a reservation, you had better hustle your bustle.
Registration Volunteers
22 local residents volunteer for 2 days of fun.

Stop by at the Rocky Point Rally and register to get you official pin, patch, koozie and more.  Spend some time with our volunteers to learn about the city and parade events.  These are full time residents of Rocky Point and love to talk about the place we call home.

Garufa Grand Opening October 4, 2018

Ribbon Cutting
October 4 2018 was the ribbon cutting at a Private Grand Opening Party Photo by Eric Brown

The décor is warm and inviting with the use of brick work, comfortable tables and chairs, an open kitchen, handsome bar and lots of windows to make you feel right at home.  In the hostess station area there are chairs to sit in while waiting for your table.  From the front entry, you can see one of the 2 private party areas.  The lighting is soft but you can read the menu with no problem.  This time of year, dine on the outdoor patio and soak in the wonderful Rocky Point weather.

Garufa Inside

Garufa Argentinian Steakhouse opened their doors for a pre-grand opening party on October 5th in Puerto Peñasco to their family, friends and dignitaries.  As you can see from the photos it was a huge success.  They served aprox. 120 people in a professional timely organized manner.  The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the food and their wines.

Garufa
Guests enjoying Argentinean specialties. Thank you Eric Brown for sharing the photos.

The meal consisted of wonderful Beef Slider appetizer .. next came Empanadas, that were divine. They feature 8 different types of Empanada’s on the menu and our table was really fond of the Blue Cheese stuffed ones. This was followed by a lovely salad to share.  After enough time to let everything settle the staff came out with melt in your mouth Arrecherra Steak (which is known in the United States as a marinated Flank Streak).  The meal was finished off with like little round pecan pies.  The meal was served with a Sangria, a Spanish wine or beer.  They make their own bread and rolls, which is a real plus as they are light and tasty.

Empanadas
Garufa offers 8 different Empanadas.

There wine list is outstanding and it includes wines from the Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico as well as Spain and other places.  The presentation of the wines is one of the most unique we have seen.  They feature a full bar with a lot of very nice Tequila’s also.

Wine Selection

A couple of days later the out door patio was finished and just in time to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather in Puerto Peñasco. They open daily at 1:00 p.m.  One thing that makes this stand out beside the food is that it has ample secure parking.

Planning to come to Rocky Point for Thanksgiving, get your reservation for lodging in early.  Many restaurants will be serving up Thanksgiving dinner so check out Latitude 31 as they fill up fast.

My thanks to Eric Brown for allowing me to share his photos as my camera has a glitch.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

Q & A's regarding Puerto Penasco Mexico #4

We are continuing our question and answer series regarding a variety of questions from our readers regarding traveling to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.  If you have a question you can send it to the email address below and I will try to answer it promptly.

Blog@Puerto-Penasco.com

Pets
Traveling with your dogs/cat into Mexico

Question: I will be traveling with my dog, what do I need to bring to enter Mexico and re-enter into the USA? Thanks, Ginger

Answer: Thanks for the question Ginger.  What most of us have done who travel back and forth frequently is to make a copy of the shot record with a picture of your dog/cat.  If stopped you can hand it to them. They are mainly concerned about making sure the rabies shot is current and the rabies vaccination must be 15 days prior to travel into Mexico .  Once in awhile you are asked for a Certificate of Health. But if you have what I have suggested, you should be good.  Certificates of Health are only good for 10 days  in Arizona and are very costly. They can be gotten up to the day before travel.  They use to be good for 6 months.  One other thing to consider, if you are renting, check with the owner as most places do not allow pets.  In the condo developments only owners can have their pets unless the owner gives permission.  We do have a pet hotel here for boarding if needed and it  is Rocky Pet Hotel and Spa.  Hope this answers your concerns.   If you are planning on bringing something other than a dog or cat, they are not considered pets according to Mexican regulations and there are several steps to go through for this.

Question: Do I need to buy Mexican Insurance and what do I need? Appreciate your help, Paul B.

Answer: Hi Paul, you do need to buy Mexican Insurance for either your auto or RV if you have one.  By law, you are required to buy liability, but remember, that it only covers the other person’s vehicle.  I would also suggest that you don’t just cover your drivers license if you are coming down with different vehicles. Here again it is a liability only policy  even though it may save you some money short term.  With insuring your DL you only have liability coverage and coverage is only if you are driving the vehicle or whoever is named on the policy. Buy full coverage on your vehicle and if you come down often, you may want to consider an annual policy as it will save you money in the long run.  If you are planning on coming to Rocky Point and then traveling say to Ensenada, make sure you are covered.

Question: Does 911 work in Mexico? From Jamie G.

Answer: Yes Jamie, it does work and you will be directed to an English speaking dispatcher if you are not fluent in Spanish.  In the case of an accident with injuries, you may also contact the US Consulate in Nogales and they will have one of their 2 American volunteers help to assist you.

PASSPORT or PASSPORT CARD.. it is the LAW

Years ago, the only time there were back ups going into Mexico at the Lukeville, Arizona crossing would be on the major United States holidays and  the return would be the same issues, long lines for hours.

Fast forward to 2018 and you will find long lines on nearly every weekend coming and going.  Tourists use to leave Sunday morning to cross back to the US, but then they found long lines, so they would leave later on Sunday.  That worked for a little while, but longer lines.  Then they started going back on Monday morning early and that also worked for awhile.  Last week there was still a back up on Tuesday morning.  We are a popular destination.

Cactus
The scenery through Organ Pipe National Monument

My suggestion to avoid long weekend lines is to come either mid week or Thursday afternoon and leave on Monday morning at 6 – 7 am or after 5 p.m. Another good reason to come mid week if possible is the hotels and condos are usually a little cheaper.  If at all possible, I would avoid traveling the week of Easter weekend and Memorial Day weekend as these seem to be the busiest of all the holidays. There is no guarantee as to the travel times, however this is a good estimate.  If you are here and have internet, go to www.USBorderWaitTimes and it will give you some idea on the day you are leaving.  As for lines coming in there really is no way to tell.  I did notice on the U.S. side, they have put out signs that say there may be slow traffic ahead.  Please remember not to speed through Organ Pipe National Park as the Park Rangers can and do ticket people and please don’t put other people’s lives in danger by passing in no passing zones on both sides of the border.

There are many factors that come into play with long lines.  There has been a strong military presence at the border on the Mexican side to help look for drugs or other contraband headed north.  As of late, however, both coming and going, they mainly just wave you on through.  This compounded with so many tourists and not all 5 lanes are open on the United States side creates a real log jam.  On busy weekends for those of you coming to Puerto Peñasco, be patient.. the Sea of Cortez will be waiting for you, so no need to speed or pass in no passing zones.  Remember all the nice people you may have met in line on the way in will probably be traveling with on the way home.  Smile and hang in there.

Passport
Simple Application for getting your Passport

One of the hold ups are that many tourists  feel they don’t need a passport or a passport card. YES YOU DO… It is the law!  Fortunately for these people it is also the law that if you are a US Citizen, they have to admit your back into your country.  However, the border people can make your life very difficult and make you go through the secondary check point, causing you both a delay and creating a hold up of law abiding folks behind you.  The law is everyone no matter what age must have a PASSPORT or PASSPORT CARD.

It is a very simple process.  1)If you are an adult, fill out the form DS11, 2) Get supporting documents (citizen evidence such as birth certificate), 3) Provide photo 4) calculate fees and submit. The cost for the PASSPORT is $110 for the Application and $35 for Acceptance Fee. The cost for the card is $30.00 for the Application and $35 for the Acceptance Fee.  If you want both the book and the card the fee is $140 for the Application and $35. for the Acceptance fee.  Bear in mind these are non-refundable fees if for some reason you are denied.  Remember the adult Passport is good for 10 years.

US Passports
Choose from a Passport or Passport Card or both.

If you are renewing your passport or passport card you will need form #DS82.  Follow the steps on the form and mail in payment.  The renewal fee for the Passport is $110.00,  Passport Card is $30.00 and the combo is $140.00.  You have already been accepted so you do not have to pay the additional $35.00. For renewals you will need 1) Fill out form, 2) Submit most recent passport (make a copy of it in case it gets lost in the mail, 3) Include name changes if applicable, 4) Provide photo 5) Calculate fees, 6) Mail forms.

Passport Card
Front and Back of the US Passport Card

If you have children under 16 they also need a Passport or Passport Card.  The charges are as follows: $80.00 for the Application and $35 .00 for Acceptance Fee, Passport Card Application is $15.00 for the Passport Card and $35.00 for the Acceptance Fee or if you want both it will be $95.00 for the Application and again the $35.00 for the Acceptance Fee.  The children must appear in person and their Passports or Passport Cards are only valid for 5 years.  For the children you will also use form #DS11. 1) Fill out form, 2) Provide US Citizen evidence, 3) take a copy of the US Citizen evidence 4) Show parental relationship,  5) Present parental/guardian evidence, 6) Bring photocopy of ID, 7) Show parental consent in case of divorce bring a copy of the decree, 8) Provide photo, 9) Present fees and finish the application.

If you have additional questions or need more detailed information please go to https://travel.state.gov  Remember the wait time to get your 1st passport or renewal back will take 4 – 6 weeks. You can expedite it with additional fees.

Registration Volunteers

Rocky Point Rally
The Old Port packed with bikers.

There are so many events going on currently with benefits for getting the necessary items for a child to go back to school, to new restaurant openings, fishing, golfing or just sit back and relax.  Come fall the Mermaid Markets will start up again.  Don’t forget about Bike Festival by the Sea of CORTEZ is coming up the weekend of November  8th – the 12th.  If you haven’t gotten your room reservation by now, you had better do it as many places are already full.

Sweet treats and Sonoran Style Hot Dogs in Puerto Peñasco

Welcome to Puerto Peñasco.  We know it is hot and muggy but let’s check out a couple of places you must go to when you are here. You need to treat yourself to a Piña Colada or try some of the best Sonoran Hot Dogs anywhere.

Chon's
These Sonoran Style Hot Dogs are the yummiest.

Hot Dogs
Chon’s son giving his papa a day off and serving up the dogs

Hot Dogs
Check out this fully loaded dog at Chon’s.

Our first stop will be to Chon’s Sonoran Style Hot Dogs on Constitution, across from the ABC Bus Line.  He has been serving up these dogs for as long as I can remember.  When I arrived today his son was working the stand and I asked if his papa was OK and he said “Day Off”.  There were several people eating the dogs there as well as people waiting in line for dogs to go.  When I spoke with the papa one day, I asked him how many dogs he sold a day and said it was somewhere between 200 and 300.  WOW.  He has a simple cart that he tows everyday and this is where he cooks the dogs on a flat top after they have been wrapped in thin bacon.  How could this not be good?  Bacon on anything is good.  Then he grills onions and whole jalapenos for your enjoyment.  The cart has a warming bin for the tender buns.  Now he prepares your order by putting the  crispy dog on the bun and starts to build from there with either the grilled onions or chopped raw ones, pickles, peppers and more.  There are several things to add next such as mayo, ketchup, mustard, a thin avocado sauce and you are good to go.  If you want , just ask for the Jalapeno on the side.  When my husband and I go, we have 2 dogs each and a small Coke Cola.  Nothing better than a REAL Mexican Coke Cola to top of your lunch and all of this will not break your wallet.

Pina Colados
Lupe Castro has been on this site for over 10 years.

Lupe Castro
This Pineapple truck is also available for private parties

Pineapple drinks
Pineapple Pina Colada from Lupe Castro.

Next stop is on the corner of Calle 13 and Plutarco Elias Calle.   Here you will find Lupe Castro making those yummy Piña Coladas served in a fresh Pineapple, complete with slices of fresh Pineapple on the side, a little umbrella and a cherry.  This goes on the top of the fresh mixture of cream of coconut milk and pineapple juice which has been blended.  Lupe has been on this corner for over 10 years come spring, summer, winter or fall.  He says he sells on average of 25-30 of these delightfully refreshing drinks a day. He blends everything up in front of  you and when he made ours he also had enough to gives us 2 10 oz. cups in addition.  Lupe has a great smile and every time we pass him he always waves and smiles, so how could we not stop.  Two drinks were only 180 pesos and well worth it.  This corner is very busy this time of the year, as everyone is wanting to rent those quads and rhinos.  Perhaps this would be a great stop  after you have been out on the quads and rhinos in the heat to cool off.  Lupe is also available for private parties.

I hope you will support these 2 gentleman as they are so hard working and I know they appreciate our business.

Which hotels/condos offer the best swimming pools? You decide!

One of the questions that I get asked most frequently is if are staying in a hotel or condo in Puerto Peñasco, which has the best amenities and pools for a family or just my husband and my self.

On Sandy Beach every property has a swimming pool and all except the Sonoran SPA and Esmeralda have swim up bars.  Let me do a run down starting with the Penasco del Sol Hotel.  This property has a very large pool area and a shallow area for small children.  There are plenty of lounge chairs and an outside bar for your pleasure.  Next door is the Pinacate Condominiums which offer condos or villas. It features a nice pool and faces to the Old Port. Close to restaurants and shopping. From here you are only a few steps from the beach if pools aren’t your thing.

Pinacate Condos
Locate right next to the Penasco del Sol Hotel. Centrally located pool with great views.

Penasco del Sol
Penasco del Sol Hotel has a great pool areas and drinks available.

Moving around to the west you will come to Playa Bonita Hotel which has been undergoing a renovation project.  Although the pool is not huge, it is conveniently located right out the door of the hotel and is close to the bar and restaurant. The pool area features lots of seating either in beach chairs or under the umbrellas at the beautiful tiled tables. One of the first properties  in Puerto Peñasco, it has always been properly maintained and has been a local family business for over 30 years.  Across the street, you will find Laos Mar . Again it is a locally family run and oriented property.  The swimming pool is located ground level with access to the rooms and bar and wine bar named El Tapeo

Laos Mar

Playa Bonita
Lovely pool area overlooking the Sea of Cortez at Playa Bonita.

Now starts the row of 11 condo complexes. All if the developments have rentals except Puerto Privada.  The Sonoran SKY  is the newest of the developments.  It consists of 1 tower. Here you will find something for the whole family to enjoy.  From the small water slide to the large pool and Tiki Bar, parents can swim, have a drink and just watch the children. Lots of seating and right on the beach. It also has a Spa as well as a little store for all those things you forgot at home. The Tiki bar is open to the public.

Sonoran SKY
The newest of the Sonoran Resort Group, the Sonoran SKY

Next is Puerto Privada east and west towers.  They do not offer daily or weekly rentals but do feature a beautiful pools and landscaping. They do offer long term leases if you want to try it before you buy it.

Adjacent to that is Las Palomas Condos and Golf Resort.  This resort is quite large so you will do a little walking.  The pool area is beautiful and it features a lazy river for everyone to enjoy.  This place is very family oriented and like the others is right on the beach.  If you have a family, you won’t be disappointed here.  Pools and beach not your thing, venture over to the Las Palomas Golf Course for a challenging round of golf.

Las Palomas
COme enjoy the pool afrea and the Lazy River.

Las Palomas
Las Palomas features a very large pool area.

Next is a residential home development called Coasta Diamonte. It has a small community pool as well as tennis courts.  Again just a short walk to the Sea of Cortez.  Renting a home has it’s good points and number 1 being it is a smaller development and a little more intimate for your enjoyment. To enter the development you make a left just before Casa Blanca and the Princesa Resort.  Both Casa Blanca and the Princesa feature pools as well as a miniature golf course at Casa Blanca. Again you are only a short walk to the beach and Casa Blanca has a pool right near the beach as well within the development.

Costa Diamonte
Costa Diamonte feature private home rentals with a lovely pool area.

Princesa Resort
The Princessa was the 1st development built on Sandy Beach features great pool areas.

Casa Blanca
Casa Blanca is a quiet resort with pools, lagoons and mini golf

Now you will come to the Sonoran SPA which has a nice family pool but no swim up bar.  This resorts appeals to families who just want to enjoy and not have the sometime noise of a swim up bar and in summer time is full nearly all the time.  It is not unusual to see 5 -8 tours busses parked in the lot.  It does however, have a great little store to buy beer, wine or alcohol or things you may have left at home . It has a wonderful  gift store that carry items that are made by local artists.  Here you will find apparel, jewelry, artwork and photos of the area.  Right across the entrance to the SPA is the Sonoran SEA. This was the 1st of the Sonoran resorts to be built.  This property has lush landscaping and a one pool  for the east tower and  west tower and  features a swim up bar.  There is a restaurant on the property as well as a small coffee shop/store for your convenience.  This property caterers to families and you are right on the beach. Last in this loop is Las Palmas.  This resort is definitely a great place for families as it offer s condos as well as large beach front villas.  Over the past couple of years they have added a new pool and great waterslide for the children to enjoy.  To reach these 3, make a left where you go to Changos, Banditos and coming soon GARUFA Steakhouse.

Sonoran SPA
Sonoran SPA is a family oriented resort with a great pool area right on the beach

Sonoran SEA
Sonoran SEA features a huge pool with a swim up bar.

Las Palmas
Las Palmas has a nice pool area for the parent as well as the children and features a new water slide.

Bella Sirena is a development that consists of condo towers, town homes as well as beach front villas.  Here you will find a couple of pool area and you also have SWIM a bar and outdoor restaurant.  You can’t go wrong if you stay here as everything is close by.  Don’t want to drive, there are cabs that will take you to the restaurants or into town.  Now we come to the last of the Sonoran resorts, the Sonoran SUN.  This resort is probably the one that most people for some reason like the most of the Sonoran properties other than the SKY.  It consists of east and west towers with a great pool area and swim up bar for each side.  Walk to the beach or just sit poolside and enjoy.  Lastly is Esmeralda Resort. This development is not finished but does have rentals available and a nice large pool.  From here you have great sunset views.

Summer in Puerto Peñasco… sit back and enjoy our city.

Well summer is finally here.  Fortunately thus far it has been quite pleasant.  One thing about living in Puerto Peñasco aka Rocky Point is that there is always a breeze off the Sea of Cortez.

Catch a Rocky Point Sunset.

The tourist traffic has been very high for June and shows no sign of letting up for the rest of the summer.  Summer use to be considered low season and one pretty much had the beaches to themselves, but that is not the case anymore. Although we will be at the start of the humid season it is not deterring people from coming down to enjoy the clean water and beaches that this area has to offer.  Schools are out in Mexico, so many of our tourists come from all over the northern part of Mexico.  There will be anywhere from  5 – 10 tour buses parked at the various hotels and condos.

During the summer months a few of the favorite watering holes will close mid week or for the month of July, but there are still many places to go that are air conditioned or have lovely patios to catch the breeze.  Several new places have cropped up in the first part of 2018 for food.  One of newest is  Boulevard 301 which is located on Benito Juarez just south of Pollo Lucas.  It is open for breakfast and dinner and their food and service is excellent.  The presentation of the food looks just like the menu.  The currently do not take credit cards, but the food is reasonable and won’t break your wallet.  Another little treasure is La Cocina de Dona Rosa which is tucked near where Salmos use to be on Sonora.  The feature traditional food from both Sonora and the South of Mexico.  Here you will find Tamales wrapped in Banana leaves.  Although it is all great, the red chili Tamales in Banana leaves are devine.  Here you will find burritos that will serve several hungry people and they are made with the large tortillas that we call “Saddle Blankets”.  You can eat in or they will deliver to your home or business. Locally owned by Javier Carrera and Linda Soto, the food is prepared with love.  Another newcomer is Jerry’s Mexican Tacos “All You Can Eat”  which is located on Calle 13.  It is getting some great reviews and has been open just a short time.  Jerry also has a catering service and has been in Puerto Peñasco for many years.

Once you arrive in Rocky Point, there is a lot to do and see.  Love to fish?  Try Pancho Villa Charters, Big Momma or go out with Aldofo Perez on one of his boats.  All of them will provide you with a memorable day of fishing.  There are many sunset cruises to go on, so check with your hotel or condo front desk to see what will best fit your needs.  You can choose from catamarans,  cabin cruisers, Pirate Ships or sail boats and you won’t be disappointed.  If you are not fond of large groups I would recommend the Pancho Villa, Sol Chaser or any of the smaller catamarans that sail.

If you are a golfer you have 3 beautiful courses to choose from.  Mayan Palace, Isla del Mar or Las Palomas.  Many have summer rates so you can save a lot but still enjoy 1st class golf courses.  You can also go horse back riding on the beaches if golf isn’t your cup of tea.

If I may add one more thing.  Barb’s Dog Rescue is always in need of dog and puppy food.  The intake of puppies is huge and they eat a lot.  You can bring a bag down from COSTCO or buy it locally or if you want to donate money to buy it, let me know and I will take responsibility for getting it to her.  If you get bored while on vacation, go out and play with these fur babies and show them that they are loved.

Come out and join the fun while enjoying the beautiful weather in Puerto Peñasco and the stunning  Sea of Cortez views.  Remember Rocky Point is only a 4 hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson.

In May the weather is still beautiful and the Sea of Cortez will be warming up.  Looking for something to do while you are in Rocky Point?  Here are just a few ideas.  Go horseback riding, ride a banana boat, choose from one of our 3 beautiful golf courses  (Las Palomas, Mayan, Isla la Del Mar) choose from of our local fishing charters boats, visit the aquarium or CEDO, walk in the tide pools, go looking for Sand Dollars in Cholla Bay, shop on Rodeo Drive or the Malecon (if you can get down there), visit the Pinacate Biosphere or just sit on the beach and people watch.  Puerto Peñasco has so much to offer.  Also plan to have breakfast lunch or dinner at one of our many great restaurants.

Sea of Cortez

As you make your trip to Puerto Peñasco, please remember you will not be on the roads alone, so plan on lengthy delays coming in and going back to the USA.  As I always say, “Remember all those wonderful people you crept along with on the way in…. well guess what, you will see them again on your way home.  Drive with caution as the beach and the cold beer can and will be waiting for you.

Once you are here and settled in, it is important to realize how many people descend on this one time sleepy little village.  Don’t take needless chances passing autos or trucks, it is not worth it.  Also it is important to know that the road between Playa Bonita and the end of Sandy Beach will be packed at all times.  Yes it is a divided road but you still have to exercise caution when driving and even though you may not be impaired, the person behind you might be.  Have a designated driver if you all are planning to par take in adult beverages.  Better yet, take a cab then everyone can have fun.  If you are going to any place on the way to Cholla Bay, please remember that when you are coming back if it is dark, you come off of dirt onto pavement right in front of Esmeralda and that is a divided road.

Before leaving the USA, you need to buy Mexican Auto Insurance.  This can be purchased online or in Ajo at Ajo Insurance Center, Gila Bend Insurance Center or any of the other places that sell Mexican Insurance.  It would be recommended if you have a newer vehicle that has a loan on, make certain to buy full coverage.  By law you must have Mexican Insurance to meet the Mexican Liability.  Liability insurance only will do nothing for you vehicle so that is why you should buy full coverage.  Ajo Insurance will  leave your policy in a box in case you come after hours or you can print it online if you are buying it online.

When crossing into Mexico at Lukeville/Sonoyta the speed limit is 40 Km per hour or keep it under 24 mph or you will most likely be ticketed.  There is a Red Cross station that collect donations in Sonoyta and there is a STOP sign there that you must stop for even if you don’t donate.  When you arrive in Rocky Point, they are many new stop signs so be on the lookout.

We welcome you to our home town so please come and enjoy everything we have to offer.

3rd Annual Charanga Raised Over $33,000 Pesos

Here is a list of the sponsors so make sure when you stop by thank them.
Here is a list of the sponsors so make sure when you stop by thank them.

The 3 year old board just completed the 3rd Annual Charanga Derby and raised $33,000 pesos for Casa Hogar, the home for the elderly. I recently sat down with Santiago Ruiz , committee chairman, who explained that they were so happy with the turn out and the money raised.  This is the only fund raiser Casa Hogar does.

2018 Charanga
Team Orange Car #4 by Puerto Peñasco.com

The event which was held April 14th here in Puerto Peñasco, consisted of 33 enteries.  The event drew nearly 1200 people who watched and cheered on the home made derby cars.  This is the Mexican version of the popular “Soap Box Derby” held in the USA every year.  As you will see from the photos, they came in all shapes and sizes.  The event is held every year on the hill that leads to the Mirador area of Rocky Point.  When the 1st event was held, they had about 200 people watching and last year about 500.  It is a mix of local families and tourists that either are visiting or live here full time.  This year there were so many people, that they lined both sides of the hill and street below. Bleachers were set up along with a stage for the local bands which consisted of young musicians who  did a great job.  Prior to the race starting, they had a “car show” of all the entrants and the drivers at 2:00 p.m..  At 4:30 the team members began to push the cars up the hill and then waited for their turn to descend.  It is amazing how fast those little cars can travel.  About 3/4 of the way or near to the finish line there is a ramp that they have to go over.  Amazingly enough everyone took the ramp head on.  They did have a second ramp 1/2 way down the hill but it was removed after the 2nd driver went over it, as it was not in a good position and safety is always a factor here not only form the drivers but the spectators as well.

Cute little grocery cart car, very creative.

In addition to the teams and spectators, the event had over 50 volunteers who had to keep the people off the street.  That job was a challenge, as everyone wants to be in front.  They lined the street on both sides with straw bales and fencing to make sure everyone is safe.  Santiago Ruiz stated that next year they will have to have more straw bales and security fencing to keep the event safe.

Over 50 volunteers helped to make this a success and accident free.

There were trophies given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as well as receiving gift certificates from local merchants, condos, hotels, restaurants and bars.
