Many people don’t know that Puerto Penasco has its own small airport catering to light aircraft called Aerodromo Internacional Puerto Penasco. It has two runways (one asphalt, one gravel) and has been undergoing upgrades over the last few years to keep pace with Puerto Penasco’s growing rate of air travel. Puerto Peñasco’s International Airport (Rocky Point Airport) is located at Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico and surrounded by a magnificent view of the “Mar de Cortes”. The airport is located as you entered Rocky Point coming from the US border.

There is also a new airport development project in process which is located on the way to Caborca, towards the Mayan Palace Resort. Once completed, this new airport will be able to cater to larger aircrafts. We are in the process of gathering more information on this upcoming airport.

Below is information on the currently operational airport in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point).

The Peñasco Airport has experienced a number of stages of growth. It is a fully equipped airport so that if you are just in transit or visiting, you will have a pleasant and smoothly-run experience.
It was founded during the 1940s when “Mexicana de Aviación” inaugurated its route Mexico City-Mexicali, with a stopover in Puerto Peñasco. The airport consisted of an office with a telegraph operator who provided information about route conditions. In 1973, the current runway was built together with a small terminal building. On August 5, 1994, it was declared an International Airport by the then president of Mexico, Carlos Salinas de Gortari. This benefited pilots landing in Puerto Peñasco, who, prior to that, had to register with customs and immigration authorities in Nogales, Sonora or in Mexicali.
On September 28, 2005, a new phase began the most significant in the development of Peñasco’s International Airport.
The airport has many amenities including but not limited to:1. Waiting room
2. Snack Bar
3. Pilot quarters with TV, computers with internet connection and restroom
4. Area for handling check-in luggage
5. Public restrooms
6. 42 Parking lots including some for handicapped
7. Signage and information for passengers

There has been talk about development of an air park in Penasco for more info see: this article on penasco.com.

Read this neat article entitled “Flying to Rocky Point” that is worth reading – lots of good info in there.

On a semi-related note: Dan Checkoway has an amazing website and travelouge up on his website  that details his flight from California to Guadalajara, during which he flies right over Puerto Penasco. It includes some really cool arial photos – scroll down until you start seeing ‘Sea of Cortez’ in his comments.
